I have worked with students of all skill levels from the scared novice to the established expert while using a wide array of firearms. My conclusion from these last 30 years is that firearms are safe if handled properly and gun ranges are safe if managed properly. Whether you’re shooting a .22 air rifle in your back garden or a light anti-armor weapon on a military range, as long as the basic principles of firearms / weapons safety and gun range management are followed you shouldn’t have any problems. #MachineGunMonday on the difference between what the ATF would consider a “Machine-Gun” under the National Firearms Act (NFA) & an uncontrolled part for a #MachineGun.   Here we have 2 Heckler & Koch GmbH MP5 full-auto trigger packs & 2 MKE AP5s. Both trigger packs were imported to the US as uncontrolled parts for firearms & the #Guns as #Handguns with Century Arms as the #Importer.   But if you look at the top trigger pack with model designation: “NOWIHAVEAMACHINEGUNHOHOHO”, there’s a notch cut out in the front. This is to allow it to fit into a semi-automatic MP5-style #Firearm, despite the presence of the “shelf” in the top green circle, designed to block the insertion of a full-auto trigger pack. When this trigger pack is combined with a full-auto bolt-carrier modified to go into a semi-auto weapon, it temporarily turns a semi-automatic MP5 type firearm into a machine-gun.   If you look at the bottom weapon in the red circle, you can see that the shelf has been ground off with a Dremel Power Tools, #Dremel (the Excalibur of the true artisan gunsmith). This allows the weapon to accept an un-modified full-auto trigger pack. Removing the shelf & the “blocking bar” preventing the insertion of a full-auto bolt carrier, turns the weapon’s receiver weapon into a Machine-Gun.   So what’s the difference? In ATF's eyes, “once a Machine-Gun, always a Machine-Gun”. This means if you turn a weapon’s receiver into an MG, it can’t go back to being a non-MG. The only way to make it not an MG, is to destroy it. But there’s a catch. MGs are both traditional receivers for #Firearms & “any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun”. These devices are called Drop In Auto Sears (DIAS), “Sears” or “Switches” for GLOCK GmbH pistols, or “packs”; depending on the weapon.   These items are considered MGs in and of themselves, even without a firearm present. They allow a non-MG firearm to be the “host” for the sear, which temporarily converts the host into a MG as long as the sear is in it. Remove the sear, the host is no longer an MG.   But there’s a catch to that too. All the features which #ATF requires for a weapon to not be an MG, have to be left in place on the host. For the MP5, this is the blocking bar & shelf. For an AR15, it can’t have the “3rd hole” drilled for the auto-sear pin. But an FN Herstal FNC lower receiver can be drilled for a sear without issue.   Needless to say it’s complicated. As always, I’m not a #Lawyer & none of this is #Legal advice. On February 14, 1911, John Moses Browning was issued the patent for his M1911 semi-automatic pistol. That handgun became the standard issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces for almost 75 years and, to this day, continues his legacy under a host of other manufacturers. As amazing as that pistol is, it pales in comparison to his work ethic, his commitment to excellence, and his refusal to embrace the notion that something was “impossible.” At age 13, young John Browning created his first firearm. His desire was likely sparked by his father, who owned a gunsmith shop where the boy worked and honed his design and manufacturing skills. He received his first patent for a single-shot rifle when he was 24 years old. He invented the first gas-operated firearm and the first lever-action repeating rifle. His pioneering achievement was the semi-automatic pistol, manufactured as the Colt M1911. He also developed the first semi-automatic hunting rifle, the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), and the M2 Browning .50 calibre machine gun. When he died, John Moses Browning held 128 firearm patents – an incredible feat by any standard – and his firearm designs were manufactured by companies around the world, including Colt, Winchester, Remington and FN Herstal, to name a few. His accomplishments were only possible because of a trait he possessed, the same trait that all great inventors possess, his relentless desire to solve a problem. Like Thomas Edison, who “failed” 10,000 times to create the incandescent light bulb before landing on the idea that changed the world, John Moses Browning believed failure was not an option. Also like Edison, Browning was a fiercely independent man who followed his curiosity wherever it led, and his drive to succeed allowed him to surpass every obstacle in his path. While he set an amazing example for the firearms industry as a whole, his greater legacy is one not often discussed. His commitment to excellence. John Moses Browning was tenacious when faced with a problem. He relentlessly executed his plan to the best of his ability and, when one road hit a brick wall, he pivoted to the next idea until he discovered the road to his inevitable success. When we, Canada’s 2.3 million firearms owners, band together and commit 100% of our focus to solving our greatest problem – the Liberal government of Justin Trudeau and his policies of division and hate – and we do whatever it takes to remove him and his collaborators from office, we will know peace for the first time in a decade. In that glorious environment, we will be free to do as we’ve always done: safely and responsibly own and use our firearms, and to train our children and grandchildren to respect firearms, other people and nature the same way we do today. It’s a grand vision of the future that is possible for us but, like all grand visions, it takes immense effort and commitment to turn that vision into our everyday reality.

In some other countries it is possible for former full-auto #Weapons to be reclassified as a non-Machine-Gun. But here in the US, ATF's mantra is “once a Machine-Gun, always a Machine-Gun”.   If a firearm is registered as a MG with #ATF under the National #Firearms Act (NFA), the only way for it to no longer be an MG, is for the receiver to be destroyed in accordance with ATF’s standards for firearm destruction. Generally this is 3 torch cuts at critical points, removing at least ¼” of materials.   For most NFA items, the weapon’s status is determined by its configuration. A Short-Barrel Rifle (SBR) is only an SBR when a barrel under 16” is attached. Without a barrel it is just a firearm receiver. Add a +16” barrel to an SBR, it becomes a non-NFA Title 1 rifle. Same with a Short-Barrel Shotgun or large-caliber Destructive Device, where removal of the naughty barrel removes its status from the purview of the NFA.   Machine-#Guns include: “Any part designed and intended solely and exclusively or combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun”. These are commonly referred to as “autosears”. These allow a non-MG firearm to be “MG fluid” & temporarily become a machine-gun. Under this, the weapon that’s temporarily a machine-gun becomes the “host” for the autosear.   Here we have an autosear (or “switch”) for GLOCK GmbH pistols, a Heckler & Koch GmbH trigger pack of MP5s, and a Texas Machine-Gun & Ordnance Bump-Stock “machine-gun” with model designation “TREAD ON ME DADDY”; all of which would be classified as autosears. According to the Obama administration, Bump-Stocks were not MGs. But thanks to the “post pro-2A president in history”, they’re now MGs according to the ATF. But that’s a topic for another day.   So even though no rational or logical person would ever view these items as firearms in any practical sense of the term, in ATF’s eyes they’re all very much MGs. These items are forever MGs & can only be made un-MGs by destruction.   When these “machine-guns” are fitted to a host firearm, in the ATF’s view a transubstantiation of sorts occurs & the host temporarily becomes a MG. As a MG, barrel length & 922(r) related factors become irrelevant.
