Can you guess which member of our crew has the Border Collie as their spirit K9?
It’s our brilliant K9C Guide, Georgia!
Like Georgia, Border Collies are always keen to learn and love having a job to do. They are highly energetic and can have a laser focus when there’s a task that needs to be done.
The etymology of the Border Collie name stems from the working collie’s place of origin: the border country between Scotland and England. Etymologists and cynologists (those who study/train canines) have long debated the origins of the word ‘Collie’. It could reference the Gaelic word for useful (‘Collie’), or the German word for worker (‘Kuli’, pronounced ‘coollie’), or—and this is the most popular theory—it could be a variant of the words ‘colley’ or ‘coly’, meaning coal-black, like the colour of this breed’s coat in some areas.
Border Collies aren’t always black and white, however! Their double-layered coat can be chocolate and white, blue and white, red and white, ‘lilac’ (sometimes referred to as fawn), or even tri-coloured with a blend of black or blue, white and brown or tan colouring. They can also bear a speckled appearance, known as merle, and may have brindle markings. Regardless of their looks, all Border Collies (and all K9s, for that matter) are awesome.
