As a former and current board member for numerous non-profit organizations - I have and will always believe that transparency and accountability are essential for building trust and credibility. When we are transparent about our actions and decisions, we open ourselves up to scrutiny and feedback, which helps us improve and grow. And when we hold ourselves and others accountable, we create a culture of responsibility and integrity. By prioritizing transparency and accountability, we can build a strong foundation for success and make a positive impact on those around us.

When invited to join a non-profit board or committee, what values do you align yourself with? Examples of different values are integrity, honesty, transparency, diversity, etc. What values do you look for when joining a non-profit board?

I have worked with several non-profit boards recently that are facing a number of challenges rooted in weak governance. In some cases, not only are there board members who have never read the by-laws, there are some whose by-laws haven't been reviewed or updated in a decade or more; and in other cases, they simply don't have enough board members or the board is lacking in diversity of expertise. For small non-profits especially, but also those legacy organizations with board members who have served 20+ years, it is easy to get mired in the day-to-day, but taking time to ensure your organization is properly governed can make a difference in your capacity to meet strategic goals.

Serving on a non-profit board can be a rewarding experience. Board members are essential to supporting the work of the non-profit, and your time, talent and treasure are invaluable.
