The CMI Self-Administered Pension Schemes (SAPS) Committee has released Working Paper 181, “Proposed “S4” Series mortality tables”. This paper consults on the proposed mortality rates and methods for the next series of pensioner mortality tables, the “S4” Series.   As well as the proposed S4 rates, the paper includes a: > Comparison of the proposed S4 rates for related tables. > Comparison of the proposed S4 rates to the published S3 rates. > Detailed analysis of the proposed rates by sector. We are keen to receive feedback from potential users of the tables to ensure that they are fit for purpose. Responses should be submitted by 12 January 2024.   We will hold a webinar for CMI Subscribers at 3pm on 6 December 2023 to discuss the proposed tables and seek informal feedback. The latest estimates from the Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) have revealed that the life expectancy of pensioners has declined, highlighting concerns regarding the future solvency of pension schemes. While the report cites a variety of factors, including a rise in deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it points towards longevity improvements continuing to plateau. Pension providers and policymakers will need to take note of these findings and consider long-term solutions to address this challenge, such as adjusting contributions, redefining retirement ages, and adopting new investment strategies. #longevity #lifeexpectancy
