With campaigning ahead of the 4th July General Election now in full swing, Calm Mediation's CEO Ed Procter explores the role that well funded community Mediation schemes could play in addressing the problem facing all political parties. How do we improve standards of living and balance the public finances without increasing the tax burden of low to middle income workers? What if community mediation was a big answer to the problem of spending less and delivering more? Here is Calm Mediation's five point Pledge Card for how modest investment in community mediation can help to decrease public expenditure, empower citizens to become more resilient and self-reliant and improve mental health and wellbeing. https://lnkd.in/eURfQwxe

Following an interesting panel discussion on regulating corporate lobbying at the #UNForumBHR last year, including insightful comments from Anita Ramasastry, Fernanda Hopenhaym and others, we've been considering what types of lobbying are #UNGP-compliant, or not. The Central Romana Corporation, the most recent target of a Withhold Release Order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, has invested significant funds in influencing the U.S. government to modify the WRO against it, while making only superficial changes to address forced labor on the ground. It is our view that to be in compliance with the UNGPs, Central Romana should follow the existing path to WRO modification--remediation of the harm to workers. We hope that the many Members of Congress, Biden Administration officials, and federal agencies who have received these visits can see this lobbying effort for what it is: an attempt to undermine and evade the United States' forced labor regulatory system. We still hope that Central Romana will play ball with CBP and remediate the five indicators of forced labor identified in the WRO. It won't be easy, but it is, and should be, the only way.
CAL joins 35 human rights organizations calling for the upholding of the WRO against Central Romana sugar and sugar products in light of their failure to properly remediate forced labor conditions--opting instead for applying political pressure -- Open Letter to CBP, FLETF, and Congress below #forcedlabor https://lnkd.in/gKyEA7TJ Signatories include Greenpeace USA | AFL-CIO | Freedom United | Anti-Slavery International | Dominicans for Justice and Peace | Green America | International Corporate Accountability Roundtable | Friends of the Everglades Inc. | Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) | LexCollective (Non-Profit) | Worker-driven Social Responsibility Network | Partners for Dignity & Rights (formerly NESRI) | plus 23 more!

A policy-capable and operationally efficient public service is any government’s best asset! Without political will and support from the top, this is never going to happen. 😞 #timetofixthefederalpublicservice
Opinion: The federal public service is broken. Is it too late to try to fix it?

The National Small Business Advocacy CouncilNational Small Business Advocacy Council (NSBAC) and David Nelson are absolutely thrilled to be a part of this incredible coalition dedicated to protecting #SmallBusiness owners and the Technical Assistance Program (TAP) funded through California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Our entire Board of Directors team is made up of small business owners, so we know firsthand the impact that small businesses have on our communities and the overall economy. In fact, when you spend $100 at a local business, about $68 stays in the local economy (Yep! Almost 70% of your total spend!) That's compared to only $43 out of $100 that stays in the community when you purchase from a non-local business. We’d also love your help growing NSBAC’s presence as a leading voice advocating for all small businesses. We kindly ask that you share this post with your connections and contacts. Together -- we know we can create a stronger and more resilient workforce and economy here in California and across the nation.
Truly a memorable day for all the right reasons. Tired but still standing in the gap for #SmallBusiness, which is the backbone of our #CAEconomy, and employ 80% of all workers in the State of #California. Thank you Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva for taking the time to head the voices of small business with Northern California SBDC, Orange County/Inland Empire SBDC Network, and National Small Business Advocacy Council, and supporting the funding of small business technical assistance.
