On Tuesday night our CEO, Susie Jones, moderated a panel on how corporates can work with cyber startups and the benefits of doing so. It was great to hear from the panellists with various experiences to draw from. Megan Haas drew on her vast experience as Non-Executive Director, Partner at PwC and angel investor. Scott Handsaker, having spent the last six years mentoring cyber founders through the early stages of their startups, had many stories and nuggets of advice to bring. Catherine Buhler lives and breathes corporate cyber challenges and had an entirely different experience to discuss. Jason Murrell spoke about his new role and how he's trying to connect corporates with startups. What was our key takeaway? In startup-land we speak a lot about "corporates", but that in many ways dehumanises the connections needed to build meaningful working relationships that can deliver joint benefits. Corporates are made up of humans, and when founders remember this, magic can happen on both sides. #cyberfitness #cybersecurity #founderlife

How about this instead - go find good ideas that have been abandoned, because execution or market timing was poor. Fix what was wrong, iterate on it, and relaunch. Everyone assumes the idea is dead/worthless/doomed to fail, and will never see you coming. Hindsight tells us again and again that this approach works. Palo Alto added the application layer to firewalls. Splunk removed the need for log parsers. Tines removed the need for connectors.

I can’t tell you how many times someone was either eager to share their “innovative” idea thinking the rest is easy or hesitant to share their “innovative” idea for fear of being copied. Here’s the lesson: success requires both #vision and #execution. If you have one without the other, you’re basically just on break having a water cooler conversation. #startup #startupjourney
