Each month we highlight an ExecThread member who recently secured a #Board role.
This month we spotlight Amy Gershkoff Bolles, Ph.D., who provides us with great #career & board-related insights.
1) What’s your ‘Headline’?
“I’m a CEO, COO & Board Director with a proven track record of building & leading high-performing teams and unlocking #growth & margin. I’ve also led two companies to successful exits, and have held executive roles with eBay, Zynga, Levi Strauss & Co., and WPP”.
2) What are you passionate about?
“Creating more opportunities for women leaders. Research shows companies perform better when their #management team & #board include women; yet women comprise just 15% of C-level roles, only 9% of CEOs in the S&P 500, and 20% of Board seats globally. And the stats are even worse for women of color. We have a long way to go in paving the way for women #leaders.”
3) What Board(s) are you currently on, and how did you first find out about the opportunity(s)?
Current Boards:
- Boats Group (Chair, Advisory Board)
- Havenly (Board Advisor)
- Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp (Nasdaq: SCRMU] (Board Director)
Recent Past:
- CleanCapital (Board Advisor)
- Ranir, acq’ed by Perrigo Company plc (Board Advisor)
- Spencer Stuart (Board Advisor)
“Most of these opportunities came through my professional network. My public company board role came via Goldman Sachs, which runs a program to connect public companies with diverse board candidates, through which they placed >90 diverse candidates on boards, of which I am one.”
4) What advice would you give someone trying to secure their 1st Board role?
“Build a broad & deep #network without the goal of securing a Board role. Building relationships are beneficial for #learning, #development, #growth, support and #mentorship. And when you’re ready to embark on your board journey, tell your network – they can connect you with opportunities, and help prepare you for the interview process.”
5) What’s your favorite quote?
“Hire for potential, not experience.”
“In my career I’ve hired many people who didn’t fit the traditional profile, including people who didn’t finish college, had resume gaps, or lacked industry/domain experience. What these candidates lacked on paper they made-up for in character, creativity, grit and intellectual curiosity, and each time they performed exceptionally.”
6) Career advice in three words?
“Never give up.”
Throughout my 20-year career, I’ve faced countless obstacles, but if you persevere, anything is possible.
Please join us in congratulating Amy Gershkoff Bolles, Ph.D. on her many career accomplishments, and thanking her for the great #advice.
