“It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.” – Vince Lombardi I spent several months without a job. It was a time filled with immense growth, and yet an equally exhausting and draining experience. No one speaks of the resilience you need to build while maintaining a positive attitude, and it becomes crucial: staying optimistic through continuous rejection is incredibly challenging. You will be tackled down, over and over; you will face rejection, several times. Being in multiple selection processes: preparing, studying for interviews, investing a large amount of time developing "case studies" (that feel like working for free for these companies) + dealing with nerves, stress, managing your emotions and time, everytime filling up with hope and anticipation — only to face constant and abrupt silence and lack of updates from recruiters or companies. The anxiety of not having a job is relentless, and the absence of even a simple text to say "thank you, you were not selected" nor to say a status update, is DISHEARTENING. Yes, you need to develop patience and fortitude to keep from getting discouraged, but let's not romanticize it: it is tiring, draining, and demoralizing. All that rejection and hardship makes you feel sad, angry, frustrated, doubting yourself, losing hope in employers and the labor market: all at the same time. As such, during those months, taking care of myself, unlearning, having intentional conversations, having fun at times and allowing myself to feel the highs and lows: were vital. Having loved ones close, making new friends, understanding how others found fulfilling jobs and purpose —resting, recharging, and moving forward. All of those together, plus intentionally thinking deeply about what I wanted for myself moving on, made it possible to reframe this very challenging phase. Because in the end, the only way out of any situation: is through it. To anyone going through something similar, know this: the situation is NOT easy, and it's okay to feel drained, sad, angry and defeated. But you must keep moving forward, because THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS THE NEXT ONE! Now the time of taking that next step has come for me. If you belong to the tech industry, it's time to pull your socks up before it's too late!!! Remember, In less than 2 years, nearly 400,000 tech employees have lost their jobs, with over 60,000 laid off in 2024. The tech layoff wave is still going strong in 2024. 😖😓😥😟 It's a tough reality that's leaving many talented folks, including some of my friends, feeling uncertain & disappointed. Google recently laid off over 200 employees from its "Core" organization and relocated some positions to India & Mexico. Similarly, Tesla made the tough call to reduce its #workforce because of declining sales.📉 A student who had a pre-placement offer (PPO) from Atlassian is now jobless because they revoked it at the last minute! It shows how fragile the tech industry can be. A LinkedIn post from an Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad alumni captured this feeling really well.🧠 The idea of a "dream company" doesn't seem so dreamy anymore when #layoffs are happening everywhere. It's a wake-up call that the tech industry, which used to be seen as really secure, is now facing the same tough decisions as other industries. It's tough to see these companies, which were once seen as stable and growing, making such big decisions that affect people's lives. The #talent pool of skilled professionals nurtured over time might break apart, as they're pushed to look for jobs in different fields or leave the tech industry altogether. This might result in a brain drain, causing the industry to lose some of its most innovative & creative individuals. Moreover, the uncertainty & instability could discourage aspiring #entrepreneurs from taking risks and starting their own #startups. They might fear that their plans could fall apart unexpectedly. But even though things look tough right now, we can work together to make the tech industry better.
