I (re)launch brands and scale them to millions: Consultant/ Entrepreneur/ Contractor; for launches, turnarounds & tuneups.
Trendwatching: 🇫🇷 the rebirth of the French cycling industry. The French government has been cooking up a nationwide support scheme for reshoring the cycling industry to benefit from its growth since before the launch of the European cycling plan. As much as France has a powerful car industry, they see the prevailing winds of lightening mobility and have looked enviously over the border to the juggernauts in Benelux and Germany - who also own a large share of their high-end bike mobility market at the moment. A result of this initiative just opened up, and is likely to be just one event in this greater strategy of onshoring to watch: Cyclab, Owner of the Culture Velo (high-end sport), Bouticycle (generalist upper mid-range), and Velo Station (urban mobility), chains just opened its' own assembly factory with a target production capacity of 15'000 units (and future expansion likely). cyclab provided €1.4M and the government €1.8M for this initiative. They're not kidding around with near-shoring; France means business. Though its short-term goal is to assemble for multiple brands; it is probable that in these times of margin compression a major vertical integration will be at the forefront of cyclab's goals, with Deathlon now also directing its vertical integration strength into mobility and high-end recreation. Home brand bikes will likely be created and assembled here in not too long. Although the French mobility marketplace is growing, it isn't a golden goose just yet (Recreational bikes are still where most turnover is, hence this factory doing that primarily as it opens). The ASP of city bikes in France was under €350 last year... compared to some €1500 in the Benelux. All the same, Moustache has proven that French brands can not just follow the quality import brands; they can take a workable share of the high-end game. YoY mobility growth is still notable in France, in both units and ASP. As things are going, France may resemble BNL & DE a lot more in 7-10 years' time... and they have a big potential city bike consumer market, with high overall urbanization. Quote by the founder of the group: "Currently, this unit acts as a subcontractor and responds to requests from startups, local authorities, and major brands who need a solution to diverse their assembly geography and complete their units for new models and/or additional volumes,” Briscadieu continues. If the targeted volumes seem moderate, this new factory has been designed to be able to produce mid-range, regular bikes and e-bikes, and even very complicated models linked to mobility, cyclologistics, using new frame materials. Currently, 80% of the first assemblies are sport and mobility bikes, with a wide range of models from gravel to high-end road bikes, cargo bikes, longtails, utility bikes, etc. The e-bike segment will be strongly represented in the production process." Trendwatching: further Cycling tire brand adaptations to current market conditions. Schwalbe cycling tire production will cease at the brand's Indonesian factory and go all-in at their Vietnam location. Schwalbe cited the difficulty in planning 2 locations with the current drop-off in future/preseason orders by customers (with the overwhelming current trend toward close-to-market ordering) as a major contributing factor. The reasoning here is different to Vittoria's closure of Dugast factory in the Netherlands recently; in that case, the production cost was cited as the motivating factor. A few weeks ago, I happily celebrated the standpoint of Decathlon when boosting their top-tier bike brands by putting Rockrider and VAN RYSEL in the visible hands of outstanding sports teams as part of a branding strategy. You can find it here. https://t.ly/Gbw22 Today we learned about the main sponsoring of the Decathlon -AG2R LA MONDIAL road cycling team, in that order. As I said, Decathlon already has stunning products, intelligence, and resources. Now they brilliantly strive for their brands. To elevate them. Nonetheless, for some, riding a bike from the French behemoth means a lower cool factor than riding a fancier brand, even when the bikes are of the same level. Well, Decathlon just acquired the Bergfreunde online company to close the circle. Now, the layout and audience can mean a premium approach from which understanding, learning, and giving their bike brands the allure that some deny them. A product is not enough. A brand is required. Decathlon knows it and knows it all. Time takes its course.
Decathlon acquires Bergfreunde We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Bergfreunde, an online specialist retailer for mountain sports, climbing, and outdoor equipment. Bergfreunde was founded in Germany in 2006 and has a strong presence in 11 European countries. In addition, Bergfreunde operates a European e-commerce platform. Through this major investment, Decathlon intends to support Bergfreunde's leadership in the long term, as they continue their strong development and growth journey. The partnership will benefit Bergfreunde's expert and passionate customers, its partners and its teams. Fully aligned with Decathlon’s development strategy, Bergfreunde is an opportunity to connect to new customers in the outdoor-premium market segment via a fully digital business model, while growing its presence in several major markets in Europe. This investment represents a real partnership between two brands which share the same human values and commitment to people and to the planet. Upon closing, Bergfreunde will remain an autonomous & independent subsidiary, operating under the Bergfreunde brand, with their current business model being unchanged. Bergfreunde management will remain in their current roles. #Decathlon #Outdoor #DigitalAcceleration #Bergfreunde

Market stats: Uniquely high-GDP Danish cycling consumers pull the brakes in 2023? 🇩🇰 Interesting data out of Denmark indicates that after showing ~4.5% growth in 22, 23 will bring a dramatic decline for a market with a healthy mobility segment (and an even healthier economy). Sourcing from an old colleague of mine who coincidently also made a post on other aspects of Denmark, the GDP/capita of $75k places it 3rd in the EU behind LX and IE. Of course, DK is a high-tax state on that per capita income, so to speculate - consumer caution for the whole European stability and security situation may be the main cause. Bike unit sales were down notably from ~460k in 2022 Jan-Dec to 275k units in the Jan-Nov period (so this is tentative data awaiting the full-year report including December). For a population of 6 million, this is still notably higher than many other markets, but looks like we will see the lowest result since before 2007. We could see as much as a 35% decline if the trend continued through Christmas. More info to come....
Is Denmark's dramatic bicycle market situation a forecast for other European countries?
