The Small Acts of Community campaign kicks off today. Focused on the belief that small acts of community have great worth - this is something I’m super proud to be a part of. One of the lines of the student oath for taekwondo has always been my favorite “I shall build a more peaceful world.” I have always believed that world starts with the small things and those build up, add up, and inspire others. It was the premise behind my only large scale solo art show (featured about 4000 origami cranes). Today, as part of my professional work, and in joyous activism, we will be asking people to commit acts of community. Could be an act of kindness - say hello, hold a door open. Could be a larger act of community - help pick up some trash, help your neighbor out, volunteer your time with an organization near and dear to your heart. Things that are free and don’t cost a thing. Got some spare money - donate it to a good cause. Before you say but I don’t have any money - as part of the smaller events leading up to today, I was handed $1.23 from the pocket of an obviously unhoused man after taking with him about the campaign and we were told to put it to the community. As we celebrate, let us honor the strength and contributions of African Americans and renew our commitment to creating a more just future. Here are a few ways you can celebrate this day: 1. Educate yourself. Learn about Juneteenth's history and the significance of the holiday. This can involve reading books, watching documentaries, or attending virtual or in-person events. 2. Support Black-Owned Businesses. Consider supporting black-owned businesses in your community or online. This can include purchasing products or services or sharing information about these businesses on social media. 3. Donate to Organizations that Support Black Communities. Many organizations work to support Black communities and fight against racial injustice. Consider donating to one of these organizations to show your support and extend the organization’s impact. 4. Attend Juneteenth Events. For many, Juneteenth is about building community. A large majority of cities and communities host parades, festivals, and concerts. 5. Volunteer with an organization that supports Black communities. By volunteering, you can actively contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive society. Know what sounds boring? Tax code history. Yet, if you learn about the history of 501(c)(3) non-profits as I have at WFP, you will learn they were set up in a way to diminish the power of social movements through limiting political actions and giving rich people the greatest benefits for donating c3. ("Where there are nonprofits today, there was movement yesterday" -my coworker Zack Campbell). While c3s are important and do still make a huge impact, here is a Black activist, Romilda Avila, telling us, but especially telling philanthropists---to fight for Black liberation, give to 501(c)(4)s and do not restrict lobbying. Show Up, Show Love 💜 Sadie Nash owes our continued success to Black leaders in our extended community. We also acknowledge the profound impact Black donors have had on the growth of this organization. According to a 2020 report by Echoing Green and The Bridgespan Group, Black-led nonprofits receive 24% less in annual revenues than white-led nonprofits. This racial funding gap limits and interrupts the essential work of Black-led nonprofits. Disparities in giving can also lead to profound inequities, but we are committed to leveraging the power of giving to redistribute wealth and deeply invest in young people of color. We have nurtured the leadership of Black women and gender-expansive people because we understand that we are responsible for working towards a more equitable future for young people.
