Talk Title: I Don’t Want to be a Leader Today: Recognizing Inconvenient Truths and Reclaiming Compassion
Abstract: Practicing leadership is awesome work. Being a leader is hard. One busy day as I was sitting slumped over at my desk, phone ringing and alarm bells dinging all over from people demanding my attention, I looked at my screen and said the words out loud, “I don’t want to be a leader today.” That thought was so contrary to everything I had been taught about what a good leader “looks” like, and it got me thinking about what a good leader “feels” like.
My name is Kristin West, and I am a leader who sometimes does not want to be. Moments, big or small, can have lasting impact and propel us in directions we didn’t think to move in. Leaning into the “Nothing changes if nothing changes” mindset has created space to recognize opportunity throughout my career. There are moments throughout our lives that hit us with such force that we choose to shift, or course correct. Moments, that as leaders we scale the wall or fall flat on our faces.

I have over 25 years in leadership development, quality, compliance, risk management and healthcare patient experience. I have spoken about how to have difficult conversations, stress management and the effects of stress on the body, providing exceptional customer service and dealing with angry customers in front of college students, administrators, and leaders at all levels over many industries. I believe that leadership is a calling and one that requires continuous self-assessment, practice, a healthy sense of humor and a lot of grace.
