I do the things others don’t want to do. My first job out of college was a desk job. While other chemists asked to stand in a lab, I said “yes” to sitting on a chair all day. The position had been vacant for months. The recruiter had been grateful he’d finally found a candidate. Then, I accepted a job in sales administration. Read that again. Sales ADMINISTRATION. Exactly 😆 Over a decade, I met exactly ONE person EXCITED to join our team. But doing a job in an unglamorous field meant steady employment in throughout the 2008 financial crisis and for that, I was grateful. Now that I host chocolate tastings, I do the things that others don’t. ✅ I’m the administrator of a Facebook group for chocolate industry professionals 💻 While it’s been a thankless job at times, running a group has helped gain visibility and trust, and I now have a large network of colleagues to show for it. ✅ Since 2020, I’ve started shipping chocolate in the summer ☀️ It requires studying 10-day weather forecasts, but it’s gratifying to see chocolate bars arrive intact despite the July heat. ✅ I fulfill all tasting kits in-house. Most times, I have help. Other times, I package the chocolate myself. I usually get packages out within 24 hrs of receiving addresses. ✅I include a handwritten note in each kit. Yes, sometimes there’s only a line, but I want to write the recipient to see their name on a card. Doing something nobody else wants to do isn’t glamourous. Sometimes it can be fun, other times, not so much (remember: sales administration). But what you lose in glamour, you may get in market shares.
