Great YPulse article. However, it's concerning that children aged 12-17 have the lowest rates of leaving social media during a crucial time for brain development. Do you have any tips for how you are helping your kids get off social media? Or how can you prevent them from being there in the first place? Parents I talk to don't want their young kids to have smartphones. The number one reason I hear they allow their kids to have a smartphone and be on social media is that all their friends have it. Gen Z is reshaping the tech industry, bringing new preferences for content and entertainment consumption and a willingness to embrace new and exciting tech products. To understand what makes Gen Z tik (and tok), the Consumer Technology Association recently released a new study, “Exploring Gen Z Views and Preferences.” The study found that, perhaps not surprisingly, Gen Z is the most tech-conscious generation to date, with 86% of Gen Z survey respondents calling tech ‘essential’ to their lives. The study also found that Gen Z prefers personalized, on-the-go tech and experiences that align with their fast-paced lifestyles. A few more topline findings: 🔔 Gen Z owns an average of 13 technology products, spending around 12 hours daily using these tech products. 🔔 Smartphones (particularly Apple iOS) are the preferred device for Gen Z, with 94% owning one. Gen Z prefers a smartphone to watch free, short-form content (i.e., social media like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram). 🔔 So far, Gen Z are following in Millennials’ footsteps, demonstrating similar product preferences, usage patterns, and a willingness to invest in future tech purchases and subscription services. It's so interesting how different parts of the world and different generations use messaging apps. For example, most of my US & Canada friends only use text messages - primary iMessage to communicate, where in China it's WeChat and the rest of the world it's Whatsapp. Regarding generations - GenZ are DM'ing in Instagram & snapchat and Boomers are sending messages in Facebook.
