If voting isn’t easy, then it’s voter suppression. So where do we find voter suppression in today's elections? In the past, it was clear as day. Participating in American democracy was only legally accessible to black and brown communities after 1870 and later in 1970 for women. Though it was legal for these groups to vote, blatant forms of voter suppression included literacy tests, intimidation through hate groups like the KKK, poll taxes requiring significant payments to vote, and the grandfather clause. Nowadays voter suppression is more covert but the effect and the targeted communities remain the same.
