(Welcome!) Last September, Ypres organised a first participation event on the redevelopment of the city's former outdoor swimming pool. Together with Omgeving, we presented two design variants. Attendees gave feedback on which elements were good in both proposals and which adjustments they considered necessary. This clarified what is important to local residents and future users. Moreover, an archaeological preliminary investigation was carried out in late 2023, providing valuable information about the underground parts of the Vauban fortification wall. The preconditions from the Flemish Environment Agency (water manager) and the Flanders Heritage Agency were also sharpened. With this input, we continued working with Omgeving and drew up the final design. On Tuesday 25 June, we will explain this during a second participation moment. Everyone is welcome at 18.30h at d'Oude Kapelle, Lange Torhoutstraat 29 in Ypres. You can register here until 24 June: https://lnkd.in/eyFZHvdJ - In collaboration with: Omgeving Client: city of Ypres, Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij Image: the final design plan © Omgeving . . . #bjuxta #bjuxtaarchitecten #ypres #ieper #architecture #belgianarchitecture #belgium #architectuur #architect #archilovers #welovearchitecture #instarchitecture #instaarch #contemporaryarchitecture #archdaily #archidaily #dezeen #architizer #divisare #architecturematters #afasiaarchzine #yellowtrace #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #design #restoration #heritage #history #conservation #swimmingpool

Director | Architect at BEAM architects A boy with a plan, a natural man, wearing a white stetson hat
FORM FOLLOWS FOLKLORE A 2022 survey returned that more than a third of Icelanders believe in elves; the ‘hidden-folk’ who dwell in rocks and boulders known as álfasteinar (elfstones). Routes that find an elfstone in their path are diverted around them in order to avoid the retribution that would result from disturbing or destroying them. In homage to this cultural tradition BEAM and EFLA’s Fossvog Bridge features three man-made elfstones that the pedestrian/bike path side-steps per tradition, pushing it into a serpentine alignment. The elfstones are large deck furniture installations, fulfilling multiple functions but chiefly providing shelter to some of Reykjavik’s most hidden folk. #bridge #bridges #bridge design #bridge architecture #bridge engineering #bridge construction #bridgedesign #bridgearchitecture #bridgeengineering #bridgeconstruction #reykjavik #iceland #EFLA #elves #alfasteinar #folklore #elfstone #fossvog #borgalina

I believe I’ve touched on the subject of façadism in an earlier LinkedIn missive, but spotting a new example recently brings me round to the subject again. Developers often go to considerable lengths to preserve the frontage of a building. Often this is because the original façade is listed and its preservation is important – nay, required – so that any redevelopment is “in keeping” with the surrounding area. But completely gutting a structure while preserving its ‘face’ is an activity which finds few friends among those who care for a building’s story. In his book ‘The Creeping Plague Of Ghastly Façadism’, The Gentle Author writes: “Sticking a new shed inside the husk of a former edifice is a pitiful way to go about things. It is not worthy of the term architecture. “If walls could speak, these façades would tell tales of bad compromises and angry developers who, dissatisfied with the meagre notion of repair and reuse, are driven solely by remorseless greed.” Quite. I was in Porto last month and saw what has to be the worst example of façadism I think I've ever seen, outdoing a current development going up on Piccadilly in London, which prior to my trip to the Iberian Peninsula held that dubious accolade. I’ve no idea what’s behind the thinking of the developer in this example, or whether it's a planning thing – you see very few ‘modern’ buildings in Portugal’s second city – but at this stage of the project the situation looks pretty grim. If anyone has any thoughts on façadism, especially if you think positively about it, feel free to leave a comment. #freelancewriting #photography #builtenvironment #architecture #buildings #preservation #façade #façadism #Porto #Portugal

TABERNACULUM. Reuse Italy proposal for the Thermae of Curing, Calabria (IT). The project represents the reinterpretation of past architecture in a modern key, enhancing its historical importance and taking advantage of the spaces they offer us, becoming the mansion of nowadays public activity. We propose a modern interpretation of the arch system, incorporating it into what used to be the frigidarium, recreating aunique space designed forevents, exhibitions, conventions: "platea". The "deambulo" became the promenade that encircles the ruins and allows their enhancement, leading the visitor to an elevated view of the Roman baths of Curinga. The ruins are protected in and outside by a system of metalic grid fences, that allows the vision but not the contact. Whe choose wood as a main material for the new structure since it enhance the brick composition of walls and find a perfect integration with the surrounding landscape. 314 STUDIO’S RESORT PROPOSAL RE-INVENTS THE GREEK LANDSCAPE on a lush plot within the peloponnese region of greece, the ‘gods and dreams resort‘ proposal by 314 architecture studio emerges as an experimentative structure that highlights the great historicity and monumentality of the area. shaped as a staggered arrangement of curved terraces blending into the local topography, the project seeks to explore and re-invent the greek landscape, its receptiveness, as well as its relationship with radical design. the studio’s design was conceptually inspired by the sanctuary of the asclepius of epidaurus, its contemplating and therapeutic character, the morphology of the ancient greek theater, and the steeply sloping series of terraces that are indigenous to the local landscape. thus, as a first step, the project attempted to acquire a distinct design identity that would refer to these elements, and at the same time generate a place of relaxation and well-being, fully harmonized with the natural environment.

🔥NAMLA welcomes Juan Perez to be featured on our platform! 🔥 Hi! I'm Juan Perez, a landscape architecture student and the current Secretary of The University of Florida's ASLA Student Chapter. I am motivated by the proficiency, versatility, and empathy toward cultural relations that the built environment offers. People have an outdated misconception that a landscape architect is a glorified gardener. As future designers of public and private spaces, we must break from that dogmatic slumber and demonstrate that landscape architecture is at the forefront of political, cultural, and economic change. Captions 2-4: GIVE ME A HAND "Give Me a Hand" is an ambitious land art design that seeks to capture the essence of humanity's desire to shape and manipulate the natural world. The central feature of the design is a hand sculpted from natural materials. Spanning a significant area of land, the hand extends its fingers and palm in a meticulously crafted yet familiar composition that mimics the nimble dexterity of a human hand while invoking a sense of awe and power. Captions 4-6: [trans]ITIONAL SPACE Inspired by the transitional nature of caterpillar to butterfly, the façade of this bus stop is activated and morphs as one walks across or through it. The juxtaposition of concrete materials and Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene materializes the relationship between the caterpillar and butterfly. At the same time, the inside seating mimics the sacred geometry of a caterpillar's cross-section while in the cocoon. Captions 6-8: Ribault River [pre]SERVE A collaborative project with four core goals—social, economic, environmental, and health. The vision is to conquer these challenges while fostering a healthy, secure, vibrant community. The Ribault River design, dynamic and efficient, provides a usable green space that benefits both the residents and the environment. It offers a tapestry of experiences, weaving through lush forests and captivating marshlands, all while preserving the delicate balance of the surroundings. #landscapearchitecture #namla #minoritiesinlandscapearchitecture #beloudandproud #representationmatters
