#EMPLOYEESPOTLIGHT Kyle Luong Strategy Director #DoingMore #CollectiveKnowledge #Architecture Q: What is Architecture to you? How do you think it affects people’s daily lives? For background, I am not an Architect. My background is in engineering and finance, but to me, Architecture is anything that comes up vertically out of the ground, has some sort of human interaction, and is man-made. By this description, Architecture affects every aspect of people’s daily lives, from the home they live in, to the office they work out of, and anything in between. Architecture is so woven into our everyday lives that we almost forget that some person or group was behind the buildings you enter and the experience you have within them. Q: What makes Project Luong unique? Why do you choose to work here? I have worked for consulting firms my whole career, and coming to work for an Architecture firm has been such a huge change. I am surrounded by creatives every day. They can imagine these beautiful buildings and sketch them on a napkin, then take that napkin and make it into a lifelike 3D rendering. I do not think this makes Project Luong unique amongst other Architecture firms; for that, I think it is how we treat our people. We care for the individual before anything else, and I have not truly seen this anywhere else. For this reason, I chose to work here because I believe in the Project that Project Luong is working on. Q: In your experience, what do you think makes a successful project team? Communication. The good, bad, and the ugly. No matter what, open, clear, and honest communication can make or break a successful project team. Q: How can designers better serve their clients? Even though I am not a designer, at Architecture’s core, it is a service industry. We as a firm provide a service to the client. The best way to serve the client is to think like a partner and not as another consultant on a project. Do what is needed, not only what is required. Our goal is to achieve scope, budget, quality, and functionality with an attitude of ownership, drive, and resourcefulness. Partner Thinking means we invest in your project as if it were our own, ensuring trust, accountability, and success. Q: What are some of the biggest challenges designers face in their projects? Not a designer, but as someone who reviews all the AR/AP, the biggest challenge is budget. How do we collectively agree on a value for the services that we can all agree on and also ensure we stay within scope? Q: Who has been your biggest influence? My biggest influence in my life has been my family (Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister), but the biggest influence on my career was my first supervisor and manager that I had for the first 5 years of my career. She was a great boss and an even better mentor. If it was not for her, I do not believe I would be where I am today. So much of my knowledge stemmed from her, and I could not be more grateful.

Exploring Career Paths: What Architects Can Do After Architecture Architecture is a versatile field that equips professionals with a unique set of skills and a creative mindset. While many architects choose to pursue traditional career paths within the field, such as working at architectural firms or becoming licensed architects, there are numerous other exciting career opportunities beyond designing buildings 1. Real Estate Development: Architects possess a deep understanding of spatial design, construction processes, and aesthetics, making them valuable assets in the real estate development sector. They can become real estate developers, guiding projects from conception to completion. 2. Project Management: Architects are well-suited for project management positions due to their experience in overseeing complex construction projects. They can become project managers, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget while coordinating various stakeholders, Rom contractors to clients. 3. Sustainability Consultants: As sustainability becomes increasingly important in the built environment, architects can transition into roles as sustainability consultants. They advise on eco-friendly building practices, energy-efficient designs, and obtaining green certifications like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). 4. Urban Planning and Design: Architects can contribute to shaping cities and communities by pursuing careers in urban planning and design. They work on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing urban environments, considering factors like zoning, transportation, and public spaces. 5. Interiors and Space Planning: Architects can apply their design expertise to interiors by becoming interior designers or space planners. They focus on optimizing the use of interior spaces, ensuring functionality, aesthetics, and comfort. 6. Teaching and Academics: Passionate architects can choose to share their knowledge by becoming educators or professors in architectural schools and universities. They impart their experience and mentor the next generation of architects. 7. Set and Exhibit Design: Architects can explore careers in set and exhibit design for industries like film, television, museums, and events. They create immersive and visually appealing environments that enhance storytelling and engagement. 8. 3D Visualization and Rendering: Proficiency in 3D modeling and rendering software allows architects to work as visualization artists. They create realistic visual representations of architectural projects for marketing, presentations, or virtual tours. In conclusion, architects have a wealth of career opportunities beyond traditional architectural practice. Their skills in design, project management, problem-solving, and creativity make them adaptable professionals who can excel in various fields. #Architecture #design #Careeroptions #Interiordesigning #Construction #Projectmanagment #Exibitions

As reported in The Architects’ Journal, after 14 years in business we have taken the slightly scary decision to close TDO and explore a new way of working through the formation of our new practice, New-works. New-works is now the new home of the core TDO team and projects. https://lnkd.in/eqqAyPKb Doug and I have thought long and hard over the years about the profession and where we see need for change. Recent events have brought that into sharper focus: the advent of the Building Safety Act, the need to change habits to meaningfully engage with the climate crisis, and the dawn of AI combined with the financially precarious nature of all-services small practice architecture - including our own experience of project starts drifting - has spurred us into action. We also feel there is a silent mental health and well-being crisis in architecture fuelled by long hours, low pay, high levels of liability and stress and - in the construction phase - unpleasant and confrontational contractor relationships. We believe that these challenges can be addressed by smaller architectural practices moving away from all-services architecture towards specialism and collaboration. We will be exploring that belief with New-works. We add the most value for our clients in Workstages 0-3+ (first concepts to post-planning detailed design) and our passion lies in this phase of work. Our experiences with the most talented delivery architects has convinced us that the future is in collaboration, with them leading the delivery phase, while we stay client-side as a trusted advisor and concept guardian through construction. To ensure we stay in touch with the process of making we will also be self-building our much smaller projects, which includes our recent and live Low Line arches projects. Exploring this thinking with our network has reassured us that the model of practice we are exploring is better aligned with our clients’ interests, and best practice. We believe in moving to this model there is an opportunity to consciously improve the well-being of our teams, collaborators, clients and buildings. As part of this we are going to fundamentally change how we work to foster well-being and creativity. The New-works working day will be shortened to 7 hours and be more focused. 10am-2 pm will be for deep work away from email and phones, with a shared lunch. 2-5pm will be for communication, external collaboration and meetings. An hour before and after work will be dedicated to personal mental and physical wellbeing: exercise, walks, meeting friends, gallery visits. There’s lots more on our new website about what we’re doing: https://www.new-works.net/ Please let me know your feedback as we venture into this new space, and I very much look forward to continuing to work together.

The Future of Architecture Corporate architecture firms offer more than a difference of scale. There is also a significant difference in variety of work. We know many small practices who do amazing design work; however, they do not have the capabilities to manage all of the other project attributes and services that may be attendant to such work. For example: Integrated Design Services: Large firms may offer integrated services including architecture, engineering, interior design, and landscape architecture, providing a one-stop solution for complex projects. Specialized Expertise: Large firms often have specialists in various fields like sustainable design, urban planning, historical restoration, healthcare facilities, etc. Advanced Technological Capabilities: They typically have access to the latest design technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), virtual reality (VR) for design visualization, and advanced simulation software for energy modeling and structural analysis. Comprehensive Project Management: Large firms often have robust project management capabilities, handling everything from the initial concept to final construction, including complex logistics, budgeting, and scheduling. Research and Development: Many large firms invest in research and development, exploring new materials, construction methods, and sustainable practices, which can be applied to their projects. Risk Management and Compliance: They may have dedicated teams for managing risks, legal compliance, and navigating complex regulatory environments, especially useful in large-scale or international projects. For any young person looking for a fulfilling career in architecture, a small firm might offer an opportunity to work under the wing of a masterful designer. That's great if you know exactly what you want to do. For someone looking at a range of opportunities, large firms give more options and different paths to success. https://loom.ly/Uy_hYjc #architecture #culture #design Head Hi Henrybuilt Tiffany Jow

The architectural competition for the new passenger terminal has been announced LLC "Riga Ropax Terminal” announces an open meta project competition for a new passenger and ro-ro cargo terminal. The deadline for submission of proposals is 25 March 2024, with 14 weeks for architects to submit their ideas. #RigaRopaxTerminal is pleased to announce an open meta-project competition for a new passenger and ro-ro cargo terminal. The deadline for proposal submissions is March 25, 2024, providing architects with 14 weeks to submit their ideas. In July 2023, the Riga City Council approved a local plan for the southern part of Eksportosta, encompassing the design of the new terminal and outlining the prerequisites for its realization. To execute the local plan, 'Riga Ropax Terminal' is initiating an architectural competition with a specially selected jury commission. This commission comprises representatives delegated by the Riga City Council, the Freeport of Riga Authority, the National Heritage Authority, the Latvian Association of Architects, and 'Riga Ropax Terminal'. "Riga Ropax Terminal has extended invitations to several foreign architectural offices to participate in the competition, including Berenblum Architects from the USA, ALA Architects from Finland, and R-Konsult from Estonia. Additionally, other interested parties meeting the requirements of the competition regulations are encouraged to submit their meta-projects. The submitted meta-projects will undergo initial evaluation by a technical committee. Following the technical committee's assessment and the jury's evaluation, financial prizes and awards ranging from 1st to 3rd place will be granted to the winning meta-projects. The announcement of the winners is scheduled for early May 2024. A new passenger terminal would put Riga on the map of European cruise ports, provide modern and environmentally friendly ferry passenger services in Riga and create new opportunities for the development of the ro-ro cargo segment. The new terminal will be in the southern part of Eksportosta, which will reduce traffic in the city center of Riga, while also reducing sound and air pollution. The local plan for the southern part of Eksportosta also includes the development of the area adjacent to the terminal, including improvements to public transport connectivity and landscaping of the surrounding area. For further details about the competition, please visit https://lnkd.in/ds6GkY22 and the 'Riga Ropax Terminal' website: https://ropax.lv/en. A children's sketch competition is also planned in February 2024 in the cooperation with magazine “Ilustrētā Junioriem”, with the aim of gathering family-friendly proposals that could potentially be implemented in the passenger terminal building and adjacent area.
