Dear Instagram, Nearly everyday, I get bombarded with odd friend requests and messages. Though Elon impersonator is a first and it gave me a reason to giggle a bit this morning, could you please step up your spam filtering efforts? _______________________________ Social media is a great way to stay connected, yet the increase in spam and ads makes it difficult to see the value we used to see. Besides the great source of info and connections I'm able to build through LinkedIn --- purely based on my own experience --- one thing I've come to appreciate about LinkedIn is the absence of spam (so far). That said, following good cybersecurity best practices are important in protecting ourselves, or at least, in trying to minimize risks, not just on social media. Impersonations are the most common social media attacks targeting businesses and executives. How can CISOs best handle impersonations and protect the company’s social accounts effectively? 1️⃣ Using tools that offer 24/7 monitoring to effectively detect and track account mimicking and brand mentions across social media platforms. Report and request removal of these fake accounts to minimize damages. 2️⃣ Implementing strong cybersecurity hygiene, including strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and regular security awareness training for employees with social media access. 3️⃣ Restricting access to company and executive social media accounts to authorized personnel only. Implement a tiered access system with varying levels of permission based on roles and responsibilities. 4️⃣ Developing a communication plan for responding to impersonation attacks effectively and minimizing reputational damage. Unfortunately, impersonation on socials will keep rising.
