Kaiser Permanente's notification of a data breach affecting 13.4 million members underscores how critical it is for healthcare organizations to prioritize data protection. While Kaiser Foundation Health Plan assures no misuse has been detected, the incident emphasizes the need for vigilance. Key takeaways: 1. Transparency is Key: Prompt disclosure, as exemplified by Kaiser, builds trust and allows affected individuals to take necessary precautions. 2. Proactive Measures Matter: Kaiser's proactive approach in informing both current and former members highlights the importance of preemptive action in safeguarding personal information. 3. AI's Role in Security: Amidst challenges, the tech giant's mention of AI services underscores the potential for advanced technologies to enhance data protection measures. Although unique from the recent Change Health incident, they both underscore the persistent threat landscape healthcare organizations face. The need for robust security measures remains universal. Healthcare organizations must remain vigilant in safeguarding our private data. Transparency, proactive measures, and leveraging technology are vital steps in fortifying defenses against data breaches. https://lnkd.in/gHjZAg9G #DataSecurity #HealthcarePrivacy #CybersecurityAwareness

Founder at Swenson Pharmacy Advisors (SPA) | Blending clinical expertise, business acumen, and a prowess for building powerful synergistic alliances to drive value for clients and strategic partners
In light of the recent CNBC interview with Dr. Scott Gottlieb on the Change Healthcare cyberattack, it's clear that even the most "fragmented" industries have critical points of failure. This incident not only reveals the sophistication of cyber threats facing the healthcare sector but also underscores the urgent need for systemic resilience. Identifying and safeguarding these vulnerabilities is crucial for protecting patient care and the integrity of our healthcare system. Let's take this as a call to action to reassess and reinforce our cybersecurity frameworks. Swenson Pharmacy Advisors (SPA) #HealthcareCybersecurity #SystemicResilience #CybersecurityAwareness
Addressing #Cybersecurity in Fragmented Industries: Lessons from the Change Healthcare Attack The recent cyberattack on Change Healthcare, as discussed by former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb on CNBC, underscores a critical vulnerability within our healthcare system—a sector many perceived as too fragmented to have single points of failure. Yet, this incident has revealed otherwise, marking a pivotal moment for cybersecurity in healthcare and beyond. Dr. Gottlieb emphasized the attack's widespread disruption, affecting not just UnitedHealthcare but numerous other insurers and providers reliant on Change Healthcare’s vast network. Handling about 15 billion claims a year, the breach has significantly impacted daily medical operations, from prescription approvals to elective procedures, imposing an estimated cost of up to a billion dollars a day. This “pervasive” cyberattack brings to light the urgent need for a reevaluation of our approach to cybersecurity within seemingly fragmented industries. It challenges the assumption that fragmentation equates to resilience against cyber threats. The reality, as this incident demonstrates, is that interconnected systems, even in a fragmented industry, can lead to significant vulnerabilities and widespread consequences when a single point fails. The conversation initiated by Dr. Gottlieb calls for a deeper analysis of other fragmented sectors that might harbor similar vulnerabilities. It's a call to action for industries and governments alike to identify and reinforce these critical nodes against sophisticated cyber threats. As we navigate the aftermath of this cyberattack, the lessons learned should guide us toward a more resilient and secure infrastructure for our healthcare system and other vital sectors. The Change Healthcare cyberattack is a stark reminder of the complexities of cybersecurity in the modern era. It's time to shift our perspective on what constitutes a vulnerable target and take comprehensive steps to safeguard our infrastructure. Change Healthcare recently experienced an unprecedented cyberattack. As the largest payment processor and clearinghouse for medical billing in the health care industry, it processes data for one in three patients in the country. The result of the cyberattack includes a review of Change Healthcare’s HIPAA risk assessment by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Office of Civil Rights. This bulletin by Director Menachem G. and Partners Thomas DeMayo and Keith Solomon covers the risk assessment, what areas are prime for risk, as well as how health care entities can strengthen their controls. #pkfod #cybersecurity #healthcare

Healthcare providers face a pressing urgency to strengthen their data security measures and protect themselves from unexpected threats, including the risks associated with tracking pixels and personally identifiable information (PII). Aurora Health System, one of Chicago’s largest healthcare providers, recently disclosed a breach that potentially leaked the sensitive health data of 3 million patients due to tracking pixels shared with vendors. In this era of increasing privacy awareness, data security is no longer a nice-to-have: it’s a must-have. Healthcare providers must go the extra mile to protect their patients’ sensitive information. However, an important question still remains: How can they be certain that their third-party partners are equally committed to data protection? At Drummond, we leave no room for compromise. Our commitment to data security ensures that every interaction between you and your patients remains 100% secure. We proudly hold ISO 27001, SOC 2-Type II, and HIPAA certifications - credentials that set us apart from the majority of managed print service providers nationwide. https://zurl.co/aKl4 #datasecurity #pixeltracking #customersecurity #healthcare

This is great that someone in the government is speaking out to put pressure on agencies to do more to pressure organizations to focus on resilience. Financial impact and the impact on healthcare and human safety can be devastating. One item left out is the substantial damage and psychological impact on individuals should medical data exposed or get into the wrong hands. Let’s see what information is disclosed in SEC filings. To date filings have been only delivering part of the story.
