🌟 Recap: Female Future Force Day 🌟 Under the motto "The Future is Equal," we had the pleasure of participating in the #FemaleFutureForceDay organized by #EditionF in Berlin last weekend. The event is all about empowerment, networking, and knowledge exchange among women. It aims to create a more equitable world for all genders in all spheres of life and share visions on how we can make this happen. In inspiring panels and masterclasses, we laughed, cried, learned, reflected, and questioned alongside many other amazing women such as Rossi Ivanova, Skadi Berger and Juliane Pramme. Our #Takeaways: #1: The new world requires inner work! In the course of the transition to more sustainability, every step counts, and above all, we simply need to start. 💯 #2: Emotions are energy in motion. When we harness this energy for ourselves, understand our strengths, weaknesses, and needs, and openly communicate them, we take a big step forward. 💜 #3: Being brave means doing it anyway or, as Laura Malina Seiler summarized in her very touching performance, "Be bold!" #4: At the end of our lives, it's the good and honest relationships that truly matter. Let's listen to each other again together. Or as inspired by Lea-Sophie Cramer, let's turn a "How are you?" into a "How are you really doing?" #5: Wolke Hegenbarth aptly put it in the Self-Branding panel: "Every woman who doesn't step up and isn't visible is a missing role model for another woman." 🙋♀️ #6: We still have a lot of work ahead of us. Let's continue to have conversations, raise awareness, and bring about changes. Together, we can shape an equitable future! ✨ At the end of the day, we brought back a lot of energy, inspiring conversations with great women, and two very special fan moments for Sara and Romy from sunny Berlin. Love knowing that more and more women are entering STEM and shaping the future of our world. Admittedly, the percentage of women in STEM has been increasing at an extremely slow pace. If we continue at this rate, we may not achieve equal representation in STEM until the year 2070*. While the road to parity is challenging, it's crucial to acknowledge the progress we are making. Events such as International Day of Women and Girls in Science serve as important reminders of the strides women are making in the field. On these occasions, companies have a unique opportunity to renew their commitment to strong Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) strategies. By fostering inclusive workplace environments, organizations can contribute to the acceleration of gender equality in STEM. ***𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇*** - The Power of Diverse Boards, by Flagship Pioneering from #jpm2024 After seeing Iris Grossman, PhD share this, I've just watched an incredible session on the importance of diversity in boards, but also how to make it happen, chaired by Justine Levin-Allerhand with the wonderful and inspiring women Frances Arnold, Cynthia Patton and Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann. 𝐌𝐲 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: - Leverage your network, but make sure your network is broad and diverse - Know your value proposition and what your superpowers are - Speak up, and ask the right questions - Ask someone to be your ally, or similarly notice in the room when someone may need that from you - Diversity is the fuel that drives solutions and innovation This isn't just a watch for women, or a watch for current or future board members, this is a watch for everyone. Why, despite all the predictable outrage, some events are still all-male affairs? Well, partly - it's because of women. “There’s inertia in the system … and a part of that is about role models. If we don’t have more women talking and acting as spokespeople and expert voices, then the next generation just doesn’t aspire to that" Dr. Victoria Salem As an event organizer, I always strive to create a diverse and inclusive line-up of speakers for my conferences. I believe that having more women on stage is not only fair, but also enriches the quality and variety of perspectives and insights. Hence I make it a point to identify and invite qualified women first but... I still end up with a majority of male speakers confirmed and looking for women to balance it out untill the very last moment. Why? Because most of the women I invite decline, while men usually accept immediately. If we have, for example, 5x more eligible male experts (typical proportion of man vs women in high profile managerial positions in tech) and multiply it by 3x bigger decline rates from women, that means its 15x harder to find a suitable female speaker than it is a man. It's frustrating as funk! Sadly, I can understand those organisers who just give up trying. This is not a new phenomenon. According to a study*, women are less likely to participate in proceedings at conferences, even with gender-balanced delegates. The researchers suggest that this could be due to a lack of confidence, a fear of public speaking, or a perception of lower status among women. I understand that there may be many systemic reasons why women decline speaking opportunities, such as imbalanced family responsibilities, lack of support, or socially induced impostor syndrome. But I also want to encourage women to overcome these barriers and seize the chance to share their expertise, showcase their achievements, and inspire others. It is the organizer’s job to find and invite women, but ladies - please 🙏 don’t make it more difficult than it is. If you want to be represented - represent! Why do you think women are less likely to speak at conferences? What can we do to change this situation? PS. Speking of which: I am looking for a few great - preferably female and/or not Polish - experts to join our already pretty strong (*as always) line-up for the Emerging Founders event 20.02 in Google for Startups Campus Warsaw on the topic of international marketing. Happy International Women’s Day 🎉 The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. To me one of the key pillars of Inspire Inclusion is the promotion of diversity in leadership and decision-making positions. Unfortunately, women remain underrepresented in all key decision-making roles both in the political and economic arena. Therefore, increasing the visibility of women and their numerical growth in any organization is imperative. To promote diversity sustainably, it is essential to measure diversity, to set achievable goals and to monitor key metrics regularly. At MED Munich site, we could improve the ratio of female managers from 14% to 36% over the last two and half years which is in accordance with the current overall male/female staff ratio at the site. 💪 One success factor is to ensure as much diversity as possible in the recruitment pipeline and to ensure that at least one diverse candidate makes it to the final interview round.
