❗We can't drive lasting gender inclusion and equality WITHOUT investing in women in agriculture. 🌾The agriculture sector is a key driver of economic growth globally, with agrifood systems being a more important source of livelihood for women than for men in many parts of the world. This makes the pervasive gendered barriers women face throughout the sector in emerging markets even more worrying. Find out how investors and funders can level the playing field for women in agricultural livelihoods in Insights Issue 6: Agriculture. We offer a framework of the most powerful actions that investors and funders supporting agri-enterprises and cooperatives can take to increase the share of agricultural investment capital being deployed with a gender lens, and provide tools for doing so. Rural women constitute nearly 50 percent of the global agricultural workforce, serving as its backbone. However, in many developing countries, persistent gender discrimination hinders female-run farms, limiting their potential to just 30 percent of what they could achieve under fair conditions, similar to those owned and managed by men. Empowering these remarkable women can yield significant benefits. It is estimated that increasing agricultural output among women could potentially reduce world hunger by 17 percent. The time has come to dismantle barriers, challenge stereotypes, and wholeheartedly support these exceptional women as they reshape the landscape of farming worldwide. #SheSeedsTheFuture #CortevaAgriscience #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen

Gender inequalities in agriculture persist in the 21st century. Smart agriculture has a potential to bridge the gender gap by providing a range of benefits for women, if implemented in such a way that they can take advantage of them. However, for smart agriculture to be a positive strategy for women, differences in priorities and ability to adopt new practices between men and women of different ages and social classes need to be considered. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has published the State of Women in Agri-Food Systems 2023 Report. According to the new report, agri-food systems are the largest employer of women globally and a more important source of livelihood for women than men in many countries. Tackling gender inequalities and empowering women in agri-food systems increases resilience. According to FAO, women's equality in agri-food systems could boost the global economy by $1 trillion and reduce food insecurity by 45 million. Source: Huyer, S., & Partey, S. (2020). Cultivating Equality: The Imperative of Gender Equality in Agriculture The world's food system would collapse without the tireless efforts, specialized knowledge, and unwavering commitment of millions of farmers. Food security, economic growth, and social welfare are all negatively impacted by the pervasive gender inequality in this industry. In this article, we delve into the importance of gender equality in agriculture, as well as the benefits it brings to individuals, communities, and the global community. Traditionally, men have been expected to take the lead in agricultural fields. When it comes to food production, farm labor, and post-harvest activities, however, women make up a sizable portion of the agricultural workforce. Achieving food security requires gender parity in agriculture. Increased agricultural output is possible when women have equal access to resources, information, and decision-making power. As a result, there will be more food available for people, cities, and countries. Gender parity in farming increases women's economic independence. Women can contribute to economic growth by investing in their farms when they have access to land, credit, and other resources. It is crucial to fund the education and training of agricultural women. If you give them the tools they need, they'll be better able to make decisions and adjust to the ever-evolving agricultural landscape. In rural areas, promoting gender equality helps development by giving women more chances to work outside the home, get an education, and take on leadership roles in their communities. It's crucial to push for agricultural policies and programs that take gender into account. Eliminating discriminatory practices and guaranteeing equitable access to resources requires collaboration between governments, organizations, and communities. In addition to helping women, promoting gender parity in agriculture will strengthen local economies. It raises the bar for everyone in terms of economic security, health, and access to education. Fairness aside, ensuring a food-secure future for all requires a system in which men and women have equal opportunities in agriculture. In conclusion, empowering women in agriculture is crucial but not optional. Food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability are just some of the many areas where it has had a positive effect. A more just and prosperous future for all can be fostered by elevating the status of women in agriculture, removing barriers to their participation in the sector, and investing in their training and advancement. For the sake of everyone, especially women, let us commit to fostering equality in agriculture. 🌾💪 #GenderEqualityInAg #AgriculturalEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment
