Off the Streets (a homeless charity in Southend) helps rough sleepers achieve their goals. We advocate, accommodate and appreciate our guests in order for them to succeed.
This #thoughtfulthursday I came across this video covering this controversial subject `Should I give money to homeless people?`. The video clip is here - https://lnkd.in/ecCkP5QM Winston's view annoyed me as he was very close to saying that homelessness is a choice! I am so glad the lady outreach worker said the question is `do you want to give money to a human being?`. Such an important point that is forgotten. I would first of all point out that not all beggars are homeless even if they claim to be! I rarely give money to people but will ask them if i can buy them something. People are very rarely bought out of homeless from someone giving them a couple of quid but i think the most important thing we can give something is time. We are so busy and running from a to b and to actually take time to stop to talk to someone is so important and so valuable. That can make someone's day. The other question i get asked is how can you tell if someone is genuine and again I would say there is no magic way to tell but i do find that the genuine rough sleepers would love to have people spend time with them and really value the interaction and connection even above money whereas those who are just after some money will get annoyed if you spend time talking to them as you are distracting them from getting money from others.
