THE OTHELLO ERROR & PROVING TRUTH WITH CERTAINTY ***spoiler alert*** #netflix episode 1 of #missingdeadoralive is an excellent example of at least 2 things: * demonstrating truth-telling with certainty via post-interview events-- someone believed to have been murdered turns up alive * a cautionary tale about how psychological conditions (e.g. #ptsd) can raise false flags in a #liedetection context; another element that potentially "muddied the waters" was his probable fear about being potentially caught for illegally selling his mother's home there are 2 main precautions/errors in lie detection, and this episode was a classic example of committing the #othelloerror: mistakenly judging a truth-teller to be a liar (the second is the inverse--the #brokawhazard: mistakenly judging a liar to be a truth-teller)

With Words, Practice (and Iteration) Makes Perfect When I write for business or passion, I’m always looking for the right words to communicate my meaning. Some of you know, I’ve also done a bit of stand-up. Scary and tremendously fun, I use some of the learnings in my life. When I teach or coach about business development, I often talk about researching, listening well, but also about choosing the right words for your specific audience. You can elevate your communications by being aware of the response and iterating - similarly to how a professional comedian workshops their jokes. This short multi-media presentation from The New York Times brilliantly demonstrates how Tomlinson evolves a closing joke to get the right and best response. Language, cadence and word choices matter in business communications, as well as in comedy. Think about the stories you share - during meetings - during pitches and with colleagues. Watch and listen to the responses. Break them down and try them again in different ways. Perfect them to get your desired outcome, whatever that may be. Anyone else obsessively consuming all the seemingly new documentaries on Netflix? The storytelling is brilliant and engaging. I’m thinking specifically of the Untold series, Quarterback, and the Pepsi Points mini series. One reflection: Most of these stories are told with a slant. They tell the story from one point of view, and point of view determines and/or dictates how we might feel about the characters. There is a way to tell a story that can make a villain into a hero, a devil into a saint. There is both beauty and potential for twisting the truth in this reality - beware! It intensifies the importance of doing your homework, reading more widely, listening to voices of dissent, and staying curious. In the meantime, keep ‘em coming Netflix!
