Financial advice has a positive impact in building assets, promoting gender equality and mitigating migration. Our work in Guatemala illustrates some of the impact in the past few months: 20% of people receiving financial advise formalize their savings on the spot, and reduces the intention to migrate. Morevoer, women who formalize their savings increase their disposable income by more than 20% https://lnkd.in/eZGD6rvC

This year’s theme is Now More Than Ever, as a reminder that the fight for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples must continue as a priority. Reconciliation Week occurs on the same days each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum to remove clauses in the Constitution that were discriminatory towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (27 May), and the High Court Mabo decision recognising native title (3 June). At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. National Reconciliation Week provides a focus for working towards our goal of a just equitable and reconciled Australia National Reconciliation Week is an ideal time for organisations, schools, universities, community groups and workplaces to advance understanding of reconciliation within their own places and their own lives. National Reconciliation Week provides a focus for working towards our goal of a just equitable and reconciled Australia. As a democratic body representing the interests of first responders serving the community, the AFPA is wholly committed to the ideals of equality, respect, democracy and collectivism. The Australian Federal Police Association acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the elders past, present and emerging. #NRW2024

My quote on New Indian Express on the expectations of the transgender community on the union budget 2024: "The allocated funds for trans persons in 2023-24 was Rs 6.4 crore under various schemes. This is not sufficient. At least Rs 20 crore should be allotted to their education and livelihood. There should be consistent fund support for Garima Greh, which serves as a short-stay home for trans people rejected by their biological families. The number of Garima Greh should be increased, and that is possible only when more funds are allotted. There should be campaigns to stop families from disowning transgender members". https://lnkd.in/dwusXTJx

Today the UNWomen Executive Board discusses the ACABQ recommendations on its budget proposal - which includes the recommendation for greater cooperation with the UN Development System. New research on cooperation between development agencies highlights that there are structural, resource and mandate-related factors that facilitate - or hinder - cooperation. We highlight what this means for UNWomen and why it may want to choose coordination over cooperation in certain instances - or vice versa - all while being able to explain to the ACABQ why those choices were made. #unreform #humanrights #womensrights
ACABQ wants more cooperation by UNWomen. It may be easier said than done.

What We're Reading 📚: Participatory Grant Making (PGM) is Key to Shifting the Power "What we learned was that in each process, PGM significantly changed the power relationship that saw communities as recipients of aid/support to become chief participants and decision-makers." A Rights CoLab trial led by Transform Trade and Norsaac, a human rights organization working with women and youth in Ghana, looked into how PGM can strengthen communities and local civil society. The SADC Parliamentary Forum Standing Committees will hold virtual public hearings on various issues of regional interest and concern from 11th to 18th October 2023 under the theme : "AMPLIFYING CITIZENS’ VOICES IN REGIONAL INTEGRATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: BRIDGING THE ENGAGEMENT GAP BY BRINGING PARLIAMENT TO THE PEOPLE." As the apex parliamentary body in SADC, the SADC PF has, in line with ts founding values, consistently focused its efforts towards facilitating a stronger connection between citizens and the regional integration process. Building on the success of the inaugural public hearing session, SADC PF is hosting a second session to provide citizens with a platform to voice their opinions on regional issues of interest and concern. This approach aligns with the fundamental principles of democracy, which underscore the importance of safeguarding the expression of the people's will through their elected representatives. Indeed, it is the responsibility of Parliamentarians to consistently engage with citizens during their tenure to promote harmony, enhance public satisfaction, and prevent disruptions to peace, legal order and social stability. Since regional integration significantly impacts citizens, it is imperative to consider their perspectives. Public hearings, therefore, serve as a strategic opportunity to offer citizens a direct platform to share their lived experiences, express concerns, seek clarifications, and demand accountability. This, in turn, amplifies citizens' voices in the regional integration process, promotes inclusivity and strengthens democratic values. This strengthens trust in the regional integration process, as citizens can directly make submission and witness firsthand as parliamentarians advance their aspirations. Furthermore, public hearings enhance transparency and accountability regarding regional and international commitments. The forthcoming public hearing session is critical as it is coming when SADC PF is in the process of evolving into a consultative and deliberative SADC Regional Parliament. 🔗Registration: https://lnkd.in/grAr8DdH Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF_SADC) SAYoF SADC #Parliaments4People #People4Parliaments #AmplifyingCitizenVoices #SADCPFPublicHearings #SADCPF #Genderequality #youth #youthdevelopment #SADC
