Jensen Huang @ 2024 Standford Institute for Economic Policy Research Summit - Last week the Nvidia CEO was the keynote at the Summit. Jensen was interviewed by John Shoven, professor emeritus of economics at Stanford. The discussion largely centered around AI and Jensen provided valuable insights into Nvidia products going forward, key trends in the industry, and how AI and accelerated computing are impacting industries across the board. A brief description of his talk - "In a visionary keynote at the 2024 SIEPR Economic Summit, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, offered deep insights into the trajectory of AI and computing. He posited the remarkable concept that the cost of computing is approaching zero, which has opened the floodgates for AI innovations, citing a million-fold reduction in deep learning costs over the past decade. Huang emphasized the expansive future of AI, predicting a million-fold increase in computational capabilities within the next decade. He forecasted a shift from static learning models to a dynamic, continuous learning process in AI – one that constantly evolves from digital interactions. The talk shone light on AI's potential in healthcare, especially in understanding the meaning of biological data, a frontier that could revolutionize drug discovery. Huang envisioned a future where AI understands the complex language of biology, equating the deciphering of protein functions to conversing about research papers. Addressing the corporate strategy, Huang highlighted NVIDIA's adaptability in the face of geopolitical risks. He acknowledged the company's navigation through restrictions, while also seizing opportunities as nations awaken to the necessity of sovereign AI. On competition, Huang candidly discussed NVIDIA's unique stance of openly competing with customers, highlighting the importance of collaborative growth and the advantage of NVIDIA's comprehensive ecosystem that customers leverage for their own AI endeavors. As for NVIDIA's corporate culture, Huang outlined a system designed for agility and empowerment, where success and failure are celebrated as opportunities for growth and resilience, fostering a robust character within the company. The final note was on the future of coding. Huang provocatively suggested that as AI grows more sophisticated, the language of communication will become the ultimate 'programming language,' ushering in an era where prompt engineering and human interaction with AI will close the technology divide, empowering more people than ever to leverage the power of computing." The Q&A session at the end was particularly interesting. Jensen addressed queries ranging from the future of semiconductors, engineering and the design of chips, coding as a profession, and geopolitical risks. An insightful and informative video. #nvidia #stanford #jensenhuang #ai #semiconductors #computing #technology

MICAS PhD graduates 2023, part 5: Vikram Jain. Many applications of #machinelearning are shifting towards execution at the #edge, on small, battery powered devices. Typical general-purpose models are too power-hungry for these devices, while specialized hardware cannot be reused at a platform level. Vikram has come up with a solution for this difficult trade-off, enabling energy-efficient hardware platforms that can keep up with the evolving machine learning software for applications at the edge. PhD supervisor: Marian Verhelst. PhD co-supervisor: Peter Karsmakers. Vikram is now postdoctoral researcher at University of California, Berkeley.
