Virtually every course I've taken has been a specialized physics class, and I understand so much more about how the physical world works than I ever thought I would. Since mechanical engineering is grounded in large-scale physical reactions, the algebra and calculus within it are all applied in way that makes sense - there's no imaginary numbers to worry about." Celebrating World Engineering Day! Engineers come in my guises, but without them our daily lives would be very different. From the power tool in your hand to the bustling conveyor belts and automated production lines of manufacturing, every man-made marvel bears the imprint of an engineer's skill. Without the expertise and knowledge of our engineers, the sleek lines of an electric car and the simple click of a phone would remain mere figments of our imagination. The skills of engineers have evolved the world we live in and impacts us every day. However, many don't realise their achievements and what they continue to do, especially in engineering a better and more sustainable future for us. It is important we celebrate and acknowledge the importance of engineers and the amazing things they do. We need to showcase the range of opportunities to the next generation, to ensure we have the skills for the future. What an interesting mechanism a Shaper Machine has! As shown in the picture, the advance is slow to remove material efficiently, while the return is much faster to reduce the 'dead' time of the process. What's fascinating is the conversion of circular motion into linear motion, a process facilitated by the Whitworth mechanism. This type of machine is quite old, and if you're young, you might never have seen one in a workshop. Luckily, I had the opportunity to use one during my apprenticeship. It is easy to operate and extremely helpful for building prototypes or small batches in production. However, for mass production, it can be a bit inefficient due to the time lost in the process, and there are more modern and efficient solutions available.
