What's New Wednesdays is back baby! Now that schools are back in after the Christmas holidays, we're back in the swing of things with our weekly education newsletter! Today's topic hits closer to home for me with expected closures in Guiseley and Yeadon where I went to both primary and high school. I loved going to school in Guiseley and the community across the area was such a pull for primary and secondary students and parents. Every Christmas, I would attend about four different fairs and in the summer there was always a festival or school club to keep you entertained. However, due to declining birth rates across Leeds, schools are at risk of closure with staff redundancies as new classes have leftover vacancies and school budgets are slashed as a result. Leeds City Council has set aside resources to investigate the changes across the city but with schools already protesting closures, there's few other options to explore. For teachers working across Bradford and Leeds, are you noticing a reduction in students either in primary or secondary? Do you think staff redundancies are the correct response or do you think students would benefit from having a lower teacher/student ratio? Let us know below! Are you joining us for our Live Learning session tomorrow afternoon? We all know that the challenge with the traditional education system is that it often follows a one-size-fits-all model that doesn't meet the needs of young people. However, a growing number of schools are doing this differently; creating schools, systems, and models that unlock the potential of every young person. Join us as we delve into programs driven by students’ personal pursuits, integrating trauma-informed practice, well-being, and life skills approaches. We will highlight the collaboration between educators and youth workers to support students effectively. Additionally, we’ll explore outreach learning options for young parents, those in or leaving out-of-home care, individuals experiencing homelessness, and disengaged students. When? Thursday 31st August 4pm - 4:45pm AEST. Where? Live and free via Zoom. How can you join us? Click on the link below and register your spot to get access to the link. Can't make it live? Register a spot and we'll send you the recording aftward. https://lnkd.in/gSGdK-7E
