October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month. A John Hopkins study confirms that non-Hispanic white patients get placed on liver transplant waitlists at disproportionately higher rates than non-Hispanic Black patients. Key reasons for this disparity include disproportionate access to private health insurance, travel distance to transplant centers, and a potential lack of knowledge among both practitioners and patients about available options. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hillman Cancer Center is committed to building awareness around these disparities, as well as providing education, support, and access to high-quality cancer care and screenings for the diverse community to change outcomes for Black men and women, and their families. _________________________ John Hopkins Study - https://bit.ly/3PQvszy University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hillman Cancer Center- https://upmc.me/3rL2cm5

📣 Tina (Anita) Basenese, MA, APN, ACHPN, Astera Cancer Care, and vice chair of OneOncology's palliative care committee, authored this piece in AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care's Evidenced-Based Oncology detailing 6 strategies to advance and scale palliative care. 🖋 "The good news," Tina writes, "is that palliative care is finally beginning to establish itself as a stand-alone specialty, one not seen as synonymous with hospice. This shift could allow palliative care to scale, enhancing the patient experience and reducing costs nationwide. However, this will require that payers recognize and use the specialty’s best practices. Only when palliative care is delivered correctly can this specialty reach its potential." ⤵ Read the full article. ⤵ https://lnkd.in/ddYn7xFi

When a patient receives a positive result in colorectal cancer screening, timely follow-up is key to diagnosis and treatment. Missing this follow-up can lead to missed or delayed cancer diagnosis. The Ambulatory Safety Net (ASN) program “catches” these patients and ensures they get the follow-up tests they need. The ASN program -- developed with health systems in Boston and implemented as part of a learning collaborative -- has already identified over 5,000 patients with over 1,500 completing testing.
