A new study by MESHA researcher Karen May shows that children of service parents with PTSD can be impacted too in unique ways, in a new research article. Children aged 9-17 of military and emergency first responder parents were interviewed for the first time to understand their experiences, producing new findings on intergenerational trauma in service families. These findings inform policy and practice to improve support and wellbeing outcomes for children and service parents living with PTSD. Well done Karen May - MESHA for bringing this valuable research 🔬. Knowledge is Empowering Future generations with hope and success. Children need the support also. How often are they overlooked and misunderstood in systems that don’t validate their situations. Schools just don’t know how to handle some of the complex issues kids are dealing with. Hoping situations will be more supportive in future with these children rather than seeing their adoptive behaviours and applying disciplinary measures. A tough topic as some people can use the children as custody pawns in family breakdown when it comes to the parent living with PTSD. * Some very raw content from kids and their reality.

Serving in the military is a noble act: going through immense training, getting deployed on different battlefields, and preparing for wars. But how does this noble act affect one person who has gone through it all? We often hear stories of military personnel suffering from PTSD, but there is often no clear picture of the events that caused the PTSD. Furthermore, what actions are taken to help these noble men and women who have served and are still serving the country and suffering from PTSD? These are the needs that Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Arcand and his partner Danielle B Bare saw, and with that realization, they built Peace For Warriors with other dedicated individuals to make a difference. Peace for Warriors is a non-profit organization with a mission to help veterans recover from PTSD and Moral Injury symptoms by providing international outreach opportunities. We are about to announce our first multi-agency training session. 3-days to learn Trauma Recovery Intervention Protocol (TRIP). This will be a free, state-wide, donation to showcase the efficacy of this game changing mental health protcol. We have also sent a request to donate a training to Texas LEOs and to DoD to donate a pilot course to a group of medics/corpsmen. June is PTSD Awareness Month! At some point in Veterans lives, 7% of veterans will experience PTSD compared to 6% of the general population. For female veterans, this rate is even higher at 13%. Veterans of different service eras face varying risks: • Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF): 15% in the past year, 29% at some point in life • Persian Gulf War Veterans: 14% in the past year, 21% at some point in life • Vietnam War Veterans: 5% in the past year, 10% at some point in life Deployment significantly increases the risk of PTSD, making it three times more likely. Veterans who use VA healthcare show higher rates of PTSD, with 23% experiencing it at some point in their lives. Among those using VA care, 10% of men and 19% of women were diagnosed with PTSD in 2021. Looking at the numbers of soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and the number of those veterans with PTSD (as calculated by VA research) it’s easy to estimate that there are 35000 veterans who suffer. A dog could be helpful in many instances, however bureaucracy seems to keep a choke hold on getting more dogs to the veterans who would benefit. Most research agrees that having a dog reduces suicidal ideation. The government has establish a few grant systems to get more dogs to veterans. Those grants total up to $24 million. The valuation by the government for a PTSD service dog is $25,000. The total money potentially available would cover less than a thousand dogs. Please let your representative know more money is needed. Please let your representatives know that bureaucracy should not impact the supply that is available. Please be generous in contributing to not for profit service dog organizations.

Defence Community Dogs are specifically trained to provide emotional and physical assistance to serving and ex-serving ADF Veterans with mood, anxiety and depressive conditions including PTSD. In training to support a Veteran experiencing stress, there is no verbal cue for this command. DCD Dogs are trained to be alert to the common signs of stress, including foot and leg tapping. These are Veteran-specific. When their Veteran Recipient is showing this symptom of high stress or anxiety, their DCD Dog will interrupt the behaviour by placing their paw on top of the Veteran's foot. This stress interruptor calls the Veteran's attention onto their dog and helps interrupt the stress or anxiety being experienced. Firstly, being aware of your own feelings over this time can serve to manage the holiday time. For many, it is the first Christmas following loss. For others, issues like Finances, Family Dynamics, Loneliness, Over-Stretching, “Getting it all done” and a Lack of Sleep can cause the impact. Being able to manage your mental health at Christmas is a skill that will serve you throughout the year.
