In July 2019, I was selected as part of the only two Ghanaians who had a scholarship to represent Ghana in an international science competition program organized in Haifa city -Israel. The competition was a Hackathon dubbed Haifa Teen Tech (HTT) 2019 Haifa Teen Tech event promotes technology and problem solving. 70+ students from around the globe come together to solve everyday challenges. "Solving problems through technology is what Haifa Teen Tech participants do best."- Liora Kalish "Participants include 70 student finalists – half from Israel and half from abroad. The teens will be split up into 12 different teams for the Haifa competition. Haifa Teen Tech was founded by Liora Kalish, who now serves as its director. “It attracts youth from all over the world and brings them together to work with Israelis here,” Kalish said." The week-long event includes a three-day “hackathon,” where the students develop code and use technology in order to solve problems related to healthy and safe living. It was an insightful experience where I got the opportunity to relate with people from different part of the word, imbibing different wonderful and amazing culture alongside showcasing the potentials young teens had in them. we had the opportunity to meet several mentors from big tech firms including IBM , Google and other personal CEO like Ilan Alter and many more. The hackathon was a fantastic experience, with the final day featuring a panel of judges and distinguished individuals. The winners received scholarships to Technion and Haifa University. Unfortunately, my group (7 "-Ride Aid") didn't win first place but we did come in second, as Group 10. The winning group, "Prior Tire," took the top spot. In what appears a long journey before now, I completed the PGP-AIML (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning) course with the University of Texas-McCombs, driven by a specific purpose. Contrary to the conventional pursuit of job opportunities, my focus remains on fostering job creation initiatives within my sphere and polishing up my data science skills with my agelong stock market data research hobby for Programos Software Limited designers of #CloudIntegra BackOffice and #CIMobile App. My current objective revolves around simplifying and demystifying the adoption of AI and ML for the younger generation. Recognizing the potential vulnerability that stems from excessive reliance on job-seeking, especially in the face of technological advancements in AI and ML, my aim is to empower young minds. Machines are often perceived as a threat to both new and older generations. Tomorrow, I am elated to join fellow global innovators in the program completion ceremony hosted by this esteemed institution. Drawing upon my years of experience as an innovator, the newfound lessons and knowledge will play a pivotal role in steering my #InnovationbedAI Labs Project. The official launch of the project's portal is scheduled during the upcoming WSA Youth Ambassadors Conference on February 17, 2024. This national project seeks the support of corporations and philanthropists alike. It is designed to provide nearly free upskilling and mentorship to students across diverse courses in tertiary institutions. The goal is to empower them to emerge as potential producers of digital services and products, leveraging the content from their respective courses. The aim is to reshape their mindset so that upon graduation, they don't merely hold degrees but also possess additional skills that make them employers rather than job-seekers. I extend a special message to the youth who might be inclined to accumulate certificates from easily accessible sources online. Such trends can be distracting, and certificates obtained in this manner may lack depth. Mere accumulation without practical application may not lead to sustainable success. Genuine programs often come at a cost, compounded by the challenges posed by the recent fluctuations in foreign exchange rates. I dedicate this achievement to the dynamic WSA Youth Ambassadors for Nigeria as they partner in the ecosystem alliance to maintain its success in the various regions of the country. As matrics around the country begin the final leg of their school journeys, the usual conversations around future opportunities accelerate in frequency. These conversations invariably involve ensuring that matrics study hard to get good exam outcomes because their future depends on it. The pressure mounts in the context of South Africa which has a 63.3% youth population, and a 45.3% youth unemployment rate. Rightfully, efforts to turn this situation around are largely focused on creating opportunities so that young people are better positioned to be active in the economy. However, there is another side to this conversation that needs to be unpacked, which is the readiness of businesses of all sizes to attract and retain young talent, in particular young tech talent. STOP OVERTHINKING THINGS AND JUST DO IT Do you know the difference between being in motion and taking action? When you're in motion, you're planning and strategizing and learning. Those are all good things but they don't produce a result. Actions on the other hand is the kind of behavior that will produce an outcome. Sometimes we're so focused on figuring out the best approach that we never get around to taking actions. Early this year, I started advocating for tech skills along with conventional degrees for students across our Universities, to reinforce this vision I told my team will be starting a university wide tech conference with the goal to stir up a passion for technological innovations among our students and put Africa on the world's map as a hub of innovation and creativity. I wrote to Federal University of Technology Minna, and got an approval to bring this initiative to her students. I was excited by the feedback from the university, but I wasn't sure whether we had the capacity to organize such a conference, Howbeit, we started mobilization and publicity and gathered the students in their numbers and started the tech conference scheduled to run for 6 weeks. One day at a time, One step at a time One line of code One click And we have successfully come to the last week of an intensive, exciting and educative conference. We have not only given the students a solid foundation to build their tech career upon, we have as well ignited a vision for revolutionizing Africa through technological innovations And yes we did it Next year, we plan to visit 6 universities across the country.. Yes!! the ideas of young people matter too... From 2013 to 2015, the British Council conducted a research project titled "Understanding Graduate Employability in Sub-Saharan Africa." A report from the study revealed that despite extensive academic exposure, our nation—among others—needs more graduates equipped with the skills necessary for national development. Another report, emphasized the critical role of basic education in achieving Sustainable Development Goals but highlighted that higher education is equally crucial. Unfortunately, the university sector across the continent is in crisis, rapid expansion without adequate resources has led to a decline in quality, resulting in many graduates who are ill-prepared for the job market. In January, we embarked on a mission to support young Nigerians, particularly students navigating the complexities of our traditional educational system. Our mission is to help students navigate academia for a net-zero future by promoting ethical learning, independent thought, and sustainable thinking, helping them build thriving careers in a rapidly evolving digital economy. Over the past six months, we have made significant strides: Mentorship Sessions: We hosted five impactful virtual mentorship sessions, where recent graduates and professionals provided invaluable guidance and conceptual tips for using traditional education to build modern careers. Growing Online Community: Our community is expanding—currently at 259 members—embracing growth, exploring their curiosities, and focusing on sustainability. We believe in the power of creativity across all fields—from rocket science to performing arts—to foster an inclusive society where youth are at the forefront of growth initiatives.
