My Journey from Academia to the Corporate World: This is my first LinkedIn post, and I feel it’s a good time to share my humble thoughts on this topic. After my PhD, I took a bold step and joined Linde Malaysia as a Sales Executive in November 2022. Many asked, "Why sales after a PhD?" Initially, these comments gave me pause, but I forged ahead. Now, I can say it’s one of the best decisions of my life. Sales is a battlefield where titles hold little weight; what matters is your service and convincing customers of your product's value. This environment teaches resilience and the importance of character and attitude. A PhD is an advantage in sales, especially with technically-minded customers. Discussing complex details builds trust and credibility, skills honed during my PhD. Every research project harbours untapped commercial potential. As a PhD, you excel at transforming intricate ideas into marketable solutions—an essential skill for business growth. It's not merely about technical expertise; it's about charting the course to commercialization and bringing ideas to life. In sales, you hone the art of selling products, a skill essential for commercializing every concept. Many PhDs shy away from sales roles due to misplaced "shame" or prestige concerns, and some companies fear overqualification. This is a missed opportunity. More often than not, PhDs are dedicated, not geniuses. Corporates should not pedestalize PhDs excessively, nor should PhDs. Your PhD title will be appreciated in the corporate world, yes! Respect is earned through contributions and impact, and colleagues and even customers will recognize your qualifications, often calling you "Dr." In conclusion, joining a corporate role after a PhD is rewarding. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, enhances practical skills, and applies academic insights in real-world scenarios. If you're considering a shift, take the plunge—it might be one of your best decisions. #PhD #CorporateLife #Sales #Linde #PersonalGrowth #LifeAfterPhD Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences!

The professional I interviewed graduated from UAL with a degree in Fashion Management and has worked for many years in a fashion public relations company. They are currently a fashion business direction instructor at an art institution in Beijing.li 1. What was your first job after finishing university? After university, I took a six-month break to travel and relax. During my travels, I kept an eye on the fashion industries and stores in each region and also sent out resumes to fashion companies in China. Later, I received some internship offers, which essentially made me a fashion assistant, doing a variety of tasks. 2. How long have you been working in the fashion industry, and how did you initially enter this field? I have been working in the fashion industry for over 10 years since graduating. As I mentioned, my first full-time job after my initial internship was as a PR assistant at a fashion PR company, which gave me the opportunity to work closely with many designers and brands. 3. How long have you worked in each role? I worked as a PR assistant for three years, was promoted to PR manager, and worked in that position for about two years. Later, I became the head of the PR department, where I worked for nearly a year. After building sufficient contacts and resources, my promotions went smoothly, though the pressure also increased. 4. What is your proudest moment in your career? There are many proud moments for me. Currently, helping every student who loves fashion to get into their dream school and find their own path is what makes me proudest. I consider it my contribution to the fashion industry. 5. What skills do you think are most important for newcomers who want to enter this industry? In addition to passion for fashion and creativity, effective communication, adaptability, and an understanding of emerging technologies are crucial. It’s important to find part-time jobs during university, participate in fashion industry events, and build a network. Communication is really very important.

Recently I have participated in a number of public tenders calling for communication support in China. I observe there has been a trend in public tenders requesting bidders to demonstrate its contributions in sustainability, sort of a de facto mandatory requirement. At the first glance, an individual communication consultancy (vs a big group), having a non-manufacturing business nature, a very small head count and limited resources, could be difficult to proof its sustainability advocacy. Many tend to think along the line of environment conservation when talking about sustainability. But in my opinion, my company has a solid case in terms of achieving sustainability excellence because of the following rationale – We conserve the environment for the benefit of the well being of people. In brief, caring of people in fact is the key to sustainability. I will not shy to say that Paradigm do care about people. For instance, • We believe in on-going training and mentorship of our employees. We put this into action since our inception in 1998. • We offer career opportunities. Whenever there are vacancies in senior and middle level positions, internal promotion takes the priority. Again, this started in day one of our operation. • We have been supporting internship program on an on-going basis since 2004. We treat them as full-time executive and provide them with meaningful training and coaching. In fact, some of them have become our colleagues as well as full-fledged PR professionals after graduating from universities. Of course, I am pleased and feel grateful to those colleagues who are loyal to our company, grow with us and reach new heights again and again. Nevertheless, I also equally feel proud of those colleagues who left us to pursue other opportunities in the industry and make a name for themselves. Many of my former colleagues told me afterwards that their time with Paradigm made them become competent and consummate PR professionals. Some even told me that HR managers or potential supervisors immediately gave them a nod of approval in job interviews when they knew that they are from Paradigm!
