💡 Spotlight on recent findings: Individuals from underrepresented communities appreciate acts of allyship more than we may initially surmise. 🌿Such revelations offer an opportunity to reassess how we perceive and engage in allyship within our organizations. Allyship, as a strategy for advocating inclusivity and promoting diversity, seems to have been unfairly underrated. 🤝Here's my prediction in regards to these findings: •   I foresee companies increasingly emphasizing the importance of allyship to foster diversity and inclusivity. •   We might see organizational programs being rolled out specifically focused on allyship. 💭A bit of my thoughts on this: 1.   It's evident that organizations should invest in creating a conducive environment where allyship flourishes. It doesn't only promote empathy among employees, but it’s a movement towards creating a genuinely inclusive workspace. 2.   It’s critical to communicate that allyship is not about sympathizing - it's about standing up for what's right, recognizing systemic limitations, and coming together to combat prejudice. 3.   Genuine acts of allyship can go a long way in comforting those who often find themselves marginalized in workplaces. Downing the magnifying glass on allyship can surely act as a beacon softening their walk. Global professionals, it’s time to rejig our perceptions, nurture our understanding and embrace the true essence of allyship. Let's use this piece of information as a wake-up call - to be a more conscious ally and help others feel seen, heard, and valued. In concluding, attuning ourselves with allyship is not an item to check off on the diversity and inclusion list - it's an ongoing journey. Every step taken in support and empathy is a step closer to a fairer, more empathetic workspace. Reflecting on my journey through various workplaces, I’m continually reminded of the profound impact that seemingly small gestures can have on building a sense of community and belonging. A practice that stands out in its simplicity and significance is the act of greeting colleagues with a ‘hello’ as we go about our day. This gesture, though small, plays a crucial role in fostering an environment where everyone feels seen and acknowledged. This belief in the power of acknowledgment was instilled in me during my very first job at Club Med, where daily, we encountered hundreds of customers. Our manager, the ‘chef du village,’ offered a piece of advice that has profoundly influenced my approach to interactions ever since. He said, “I don’t care how many times a day and in how many languages you do it; I don’t expect you to remember every customer. What is important is making sure not a single one feels forgotten. Just say hello and smile.” This lesson has stayed with me, highlighting the importance of making every individual feel valued and included, regardless of the setting. It’s a reminder that through our daily actions, no matter how small, we have the power to contribute to a more inclusive and welcoming environment. “We must change our mindset if we are to create an equitable future for the many, not just the few.” - I. Stephanie Boyce FKC, FRSA Stephanie gave an absolutely inspirational talk at Clifford Chance to mark Social Mobility Day in the UK (13 June). She shared her story of how she moved from council estate to the first Black president of The Law Society. Stephanie said: “Being president allowed me to walk through doors I did not know were there.” And that’s the power of position. She acknowledged how where we start in life does mean some (many) have barriers to overcome if we’re to reach those positions of power. “Where you started in life should not affect your attitude on how far you can go,” she said. In reality we know it does. Stephanie outlined how being from a social mobility background can impact your Earning Potential with barriers including: - Access to work experience - Lack of finances - Lack of connections from family and wider networks All the above intrinsically intertwined. Stephanie outlined her solutions: - Providing paid work experience - Use contextual recruitment process - Pay for candidates travel and accommodation to attend interviews - Share pay ranges on job ads She explained that organisations know the barriers and many know the solutions but “there is a gap between what we know should happen and what actually happens”. Stephanie did also see her background as a strength: “I know the power social mobility can have. It enriches the lives of some, and can be limiting for others”. There way so much to take away from the talk that I could be writing for a while. Instead, I thought it worth resharing something we did when I was at the BBC. For me, it underpins Stephanie’s point that we all have different starting points so we need to educate ourselves to know how to support ourselves and others. Allyship is a core focus for any workplace, keen to learn more I did some exploring, and here's what I learned. In our journey towards building an inclusive and diverse workplace, allyship plays a pivotal role. Allyship is not just a buzzword; it's a commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued, and empowered. By actively supporting each other, we foster an atmosphere of unity, growth, and innovation. 🙌 What is Allyship? 🤝 Allyship is the act of advocating for and supporting individuals or groups who face systemic disadvantages or discrimination. It's about recognizing privilege and using it to help others. It's not just about being non-discriminatory but actively working to dismantle barriers and biases. 💡 Why Allyship Matters 🚀 Strength in Unity: When we stand together, we are stronger. Allyship builds bridges, breaks down barriers, and encourages collaboration, leading to greater success for all. Diverse Perspectives: Allyship fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace where a wide range of perspectives can thrive. This diversity drives innovation and creativity. Empowerment: Being an ally empowers individuals to be their authentic selves at work, leading to increased job satisfaction and productivity. 🌟 How to Be an Ally 🤗 Listen Actively: Take the time to listen to the experiences and concerns of your colleagues, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Understand their perspectives and challenges. Educate Yourself: Educate yourself about different forms of discrimination, biases, and privilege. Knowledge is the first step to meaningful change. Speak Up: If you witness discrimination or bias, speak up respectfully. Use your privilege to support your colleagues and address issues constructively. Amplify Voices: Promote and celebrate the achievements and contributions of your marginalized colleagues. Use your platform to amplify their voices. Challenge Your Own Bias: Reflect on your own biases and work towards overcoming them. In today’s global environment, what qualities do you think define a truly inclusive leader? In my honest opinion an inclusive leader prefers to prioritize the authenticity and psychological safety of his team. Inclusion can be reflected when people feel free to express themselves and be themselves. On the other hand, a good inclusive leader should have the curiosity to learn new things, educate himself as much as possible on inclusion issues, and be able to question certain structures instead of blindly following rules. What’s an exciting project you’re currently involved in, and how does it connect to your personal interests? My main goals right now are to keep learning more about who I am as a person, advance my career in the hospitality sector, and absorb as much knowledge as I can while living overseas. My interests as an immigrant in a new nation include primarily exploring new places, experiencing and learning as much as I can about differently cultures, and striking a balance between my personal and professional life. Does your family have any traditions that are especially important to you? I could say that one of the few traditions we preserve as a family is celebrating our birthdays together as much as possible, enjoying those delicious homemade meals are part of my most precious memories. As I mentioned before, being away from my family, a tradition could be to maintain constant communication via Face-time, keeping each other informed about our lives weekly is another of our traditions. With respect to Pride Month, what book/film/podcast/artwork/etc. that resonates with the LGBTQIA+ experiences and why is it impactful? When I was a teenager, I watched my first LGBTQIA+ film, Brokeback Mountain, which had a profound effect on me. It was a harsh reality check that illustrated how members of our community are mistreated, harassed, and in some cases, unjustly killed because of who they are. Though much progress has been made in the area of rights, I feel that, in light of this film, there is still more work to be done. How does Ace differ from other companies you've worked for? What I appreciate most about belonging to the Ace Hotel Sydney team is that in some way they have managed to celebrate and enhance our differences, I love the way in which together as a team we celebrate the diversity of our personalities, they make me feel that it is okay to be who I am. Working at Ace feels like working with a beautiful little family that works and helps each other inside and outside of our workplace.
