MEMORIAL DAY | Like more Americans than you might think at first blush, I didn't really know anyone in the military while growing up. No bases nearby, no signs of the military-industrial complex—my environment offered no glimpse into those realms. Sure, I occasionally encountered veterans, observed the holidays, learned the history, and, of course, would thank servicemembers on the off-chance I saw one in uniform at the airport. But the significance of that gratitude eluded me and most people I knew. Think about the following statistic: active-duty military personnel comprise less than one-half of 1% of the U.S. population. Even taking into consideration anyone with military service in their background? Still single digit percentages. And, truth be told, a vast majority hail from just a handful of states. Let that sink in... one-half of 1%... This is why I write this post. To the many, perhaps like myself once, or you, reader, who might be tangentially connected, deeply caring, but lacking regular exposure to that world day in and day out. For myself, it has been 13 years of military service. A profession that has taken me across the world, forged lifelong friendships, broadened horizons, and brought both joy and pain. This isn’t unique—each servicemember has such personal stories, although often resonating just within their own circles. Which brings us to today, Memorial Day. A time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service. Our world is a fractured place lately, every issue laden with "baggage." Yet, we can get beyond it by striving to understand one another, giving grace to others, and embracing our collective strength over prevailing forms of individualism instead. Need somewhere to look? Those we honor on Memorial Day embodied this ethos. Please take a moment to remember and honor them, but perhaps also take a moment longer and seek to understand more about their lives, their sacrifices, and their communities. I promise you won't regret doing so. And, most importantly, the families of the fallen who keep their stories alive, they're heroes. #memorialday #inspiration #military

There are three different variations of the National Medal of Honor. Each medal symbolizes the values of Courage, Integrity, Commitment, Sacrifice, Citizenship, and Patriotism. Today, we highlight the unique features that make up the Army National Medal of Honor. Oak Clusters: Dark green oak clusters located in each of the star’s five points represent strength. Laurel Wreath: The wreath of laurel leaves, a symbol of victory, was added in 1904. Minerva: A simple profile of Minerva, the Helmeted Goddess of Wisdom and War, rests in the center of the medal. United States of America: The words “United States of America” surround the central engraving.

🇺🇸 As Memorial Day approaches, it’s crucial to reflect on the profound significance behind this federal holiday. Not just a day for barbecues and family gatherings, Memorial Day serves a solemn purpose: to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military. My own memories of Memorial Day are bittersweet. Growing up, I watched my community come together to decorate the town with flags and flowers, each one representing a story, a family, a loss. It was a day of collective mourning and gratitude, strikingly different from the usual festive spirit of other holidays. 💔 The history of Memorial camp dates back to May 30, 1868, when it was first observed to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Its significance grew to encompass all American military personnel who died in service following World War I. Unlike Veterans Day, which honors all who served, Memorial Day specifically remembers those who lost their lives. Here’s how many of us observe this day: - Visiting cemeteries and memorials - Participating in local parades and memorial services - Holding a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen 🤔 But what do these observances mean to you? How do you honor this day, and what conversations do you hope it sparks among the younger generations? As we approach Memorial Day on May 27, 2024, let’s not only enjoy the freedom of a three-day weekend but also embrace the responsibility to remember and honor those who can no longer celebrate with us. 🌸 If you have personal stories or traditions related to Memorial Day, I encourage you to share them. Let’s use this space to keep the memory and significance of this day alive. #MemorialDay #HonorAndRemember #Military #USHistory #NationalService 🇺🇸 https://lnkd.in/eC7nPwj9

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆" Every year, I see a common communication mistake that makes me cringe: people and businesses saying "Happy Memorial Day" or promoting "Happy Memorial Day sales." Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country. For those remembering and mourning fallen heroes, "Happy Memorial Day" can feel out of place and insensitive. Instead, consider using more appropriate phrases such as: "Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day" "Honoring our fallen heroes this Memorial Day" "Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice" By choosing your words carefully, you show respect and understanding for the true significance of this solemn day. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 If you're promoting a sale, focus on the event without using the phrase "Happy Memorial Day." Here are some examples: "Memorial Day Weekend Sale: Honoring Our Heroes with Special Discounts" "Memorial Day Sale: Great Deals This Weekend" "Commemorate Memorial Day with Our Exclusive Offers" This approach allows you to acknowledge the significance of the holiday while promoting your sale respectfully. Let's honor their memory appropriately. #CommunicationTips #MemorialDay #Respect #HonoringOurHeroes #MarketingTips #smithmarketinggroup

Today, as we commemorate Memorial Day, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary service and sacrifice of my father, a proud member of the 100th Infantry Battalion in World War II. My father and his comrades bravely fought from the toe of Italy all the way to occupied France. My father’s journey began in Hilo, Hawaii, where he was sent off to war by a community of patriotic Japanese Americans, including his family and friends. Despite facing prejudice and doubt, these courageous individuals stood united in their commitment to defend the freedoms and values of our great nation. In November 2011, my father was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, a testament to the extraordinary valor and dedication of the 100th Infantry Battalion. This honor is a powerful reminder of the profound impact these heroes had on our history and the enduring legacy they left behind. As I reflect on my father's service, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. His story, and those of his fellow soldiers, teach us invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience, and sacrifice. They remind us that true leadership is not just about wielding authority but about serving others selflessly, standing firm in the face of adversity, and striving for a greater good. This Memorial Day, let us honor and remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire us. As we pay tribute to these heroes, let’s do our best to embody the ideals that they fought for—integrity, unity, and unwavering commitment to justice and freedom. May we never forget the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women, and may their legacy continue to shape and inspire future generations. #memorialday #neverforget #100thbattalion #goforbroke #niseisoldier #congressionalgoldmedal #leadership #servantleadership #americanhistory #AsianAmerican #thewaytogrow #leadershipdevelopment #HonorOurHeroes #ServiceAndSacrifice #LegacyOfBravery #Patriotism #NeverForget Glenn Furuya Debbie B. Anzac Day 🌟 1: REMEMBER THE DAY. 🌺 This isn't just any ordinary day—respect the solemnity. Don't turn up to the Dawn service dressed like you're hitting the club, and keep attire respectful. It's about honoring those who served, not about us. 2: Stick together with your mates. 🤝 No one should be left alone on such an emotional day. Don't let a digger sit alone in a gutter—offer support and companionship. 3: Buy an old Digger a beer. 🍻 Listen to their stories and share some laughs. It means the world to them, and it might make their whole week. 4: Unity matters. 🇦🇺 Whether Army, Air Force, Navy, or any other background, we're all on the same team. Don't let differences divide us—Anzac Day is about honoring them all. 5: Enjoy the day respectfully. 🎉 Attend the Dawn Service, relish a Gunfire Breakfast, play two up, and reconnect with old mates. Embrace our traditions, old and new, but always with reverence for those who sacrificed for us. Lest We Forget. 🌹
