**Community-led partnership success** The recent collaboration between Leatherhead Trinity School, Howard Of Effingham School, and Age Concern Mole Valley exemplifies a commendable community-led partnership, showcasing the positive impact that can arise when educational institutions and community organizations join forces. Both Leatherhead Trinity School and Howard Of Effingham School expressed a genuine interest in engaging their students in local community projects, providing them with opportunities to grasp wider societal concerns. This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to fostering a sense of social responsibility and community engagement among the student body. The decision to channel this collaborative spirit with the help of Sonia Hubbard with Age Concern Mole Valley's yearly Christmas initiative is both thoughtful and impactful. By contributing to the preparation of Christmas packs for residents in Leatherhead, particularly those who are socially isolated, the partnership addresses a pressing societal concern while bringing joy and festive cheer to those in need. Lizzie Nix's statement from Howard Of Effingham School encapsulates the heartwarming essence of this initiative. Her acknowledgment that "the students have really enjoyed it" not only reflects the positive experience of the participating students but also underscores the importance of incorporating community-focused activities into the educational experience. The hope to bring joy to those who receive the Christmas cards further highlights the empathy and compassion instilled in the students through their involvement in this community-led project. This partnership serves as an inspiring model for other educational institutions and community organizations looking to bridge the gap between academia and community service. It demonstrates that collaboration between schools and community groups can create meaningful, purposeful projects that benefit both students and the wider community. Ultimately, initiatives like these contribute not only to academic growth but also to the development of socially conscious and compassionate individuals within the community. #councilworker #communitypower #partnerships #localauthority #localgovernment Surrey County Council

If you know me, then you know I love getting involved in my community. Here is what I've been up to this past year! It can be tricky sometimes to balance our time between our career, family obligations, and personal time, but making local community engagement a priority is essential. ALL OF US have skills, gifts, and networks that we can leverage for the sake of our neighbors. To make this world a better place, we need to start locally, maybe as simple as just getting to know our neighbors next door, or maybe it is sitting on a board for a cause you believe in. Whatever it is, what is your next step? I took my step this past year, and I had the privilege to step onto the board at my kid's charter school. (https://lnkd.in/gvbJzcuj) The staff at this school is challenging the status quo in many areas, including student body inclusion through social and emotional learning, enhancing academic testing through integrating the outdoors, volunteering, and learning about our local impact on the environment and our role in sustainability, and increasing student academic test scores that outpaced every school in our county. My favorite that I have observed is the time they take to know every child as they develop individualized learning plans. These things don't just happen because of tax dollars; they happen because every individual provides their time and energy supporting this cause: teachers, parents, and community members who see opportunity in tomorrow. I would like to challenge us all this weekend: do some research and find your cause. Let's get involved in something outside of our careers that brings others life and, in turn, us life. Involvement in things other than work actually increases our creative performance and output at our daily jobs. #community #education #volunteerism #career #allhandsondeck

CENTRE CELEBRATES 20years This week marks the 20-year anniversary of the establishment of the Centre for Children and Young People. And in typical Centre style, we’ve let it fly mostly under the radar as we keep focused on the research in front of us. Two decades on, there’s still much to be done in ensuring the dignity, rights and wellbeing of children and young people are understood and adequately addressed in research, policy and practice, including the right to be heard in matters that impact their lives. But we couldn’t let this moment pass without acknowledging the contributions, support and vision of SO many colleagues right from the beginning, both internal and external to SCU, and those who joined along the way. You are an integral part of this story – thank you for being champions of the Centre’s work. So, too, the support and collaboration we have enjoyed with over 100 government, non-government and community partners regionally, nationally and internationally, who have taught us much about ensuring the research we do is relevant, rigorous and accessible to those who can best use it. Some have been on this journey with us over countless years and many projects. Very especially, though, we are indebted to the many thousands of children and young people who have participated in our research, as participants, co-researchers and advisors. It is from you that we have learned the most – and in return we hope that we’ve done justice to this. 20 years on, there is much that is happening across the world that is unsettling in its short- and long-term impact on the rights, wellbeing and safety of children. Moving forward will require, more than ever, that we each remain vigilant to the ways we listen to the views of children and young people and work together to find evidence informed solutions that honour their experiences and support their aspirations for the future

Our Perspective on the Idea of the Students' Association's Student Opportunities Representatives The Students' Association defines Student Opportunities Representatives as: "Student Opportunities Representatives give a voice to students involved in our societies and volunteering groups, ensuring that issues like space, funding and training are on the Students' Association's agenda. They also form the Activities Executive which is responsible for approving new societies and shaping the regulations that determine how societies and volunteering groups run." We understand their existence, but they do not benefit most of the King's Buildings community, and to a greater extent, the students of the University of Edinburgh's Satellite Campuses. Why? Our Main Reasons: - We are skeptical of the Students' Association-affiliated Student Societies' democraticness. - Hobby societies rarely touch the Satellite Campuses. Our Solutions: - Our Community Committee We believe a participatory model for student opportunities. In this sector, students plan and host events. - Our Commonwealth Centre In this sector, students enjoy their hobbies with each other. Both of these solutions lie within our organization. In terms of the wider University community, we support the establishment of the Cross-Campus Community Committee as a suitable alternative to the Students' Association's Student Opportunities Representatives.
