📸 Dr Prue Williams moderates a panel discussion on how to ensure the sustainability research we fund makes a difference during a plenary session of the 2024 annual meeting of the Global Research Council #grc24. Our Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment General Manager Future Research System attended the meeting alongside heads of science and engineering funding agencies from around the world. This year, discussions focused on research on sustainability, sustainability of research and the use of sustainability science for society. “To ensure impact, funders need to make sure there is a dialogue throughout the whole research process between researchers and communities, policy makers and other stakeholders. Partnerships between researchers and between researchers and stakeholders need to be equitable to ensure that all partners benefit," Prue says. “There was quite a lot of discussion about the need to change the current system which rewards researchers for individual academic excellence i.e., producing papers. By funders taking the lead on recognising other forms of knowledge transfer and encouraging collaboration, we could make better progress on sustainability research. “Another key theme was the need for funders to incentivise responsible sustainable research practices like reducing travel, sharing facilities, waste management, gender equality and social inclusion.” Global cooperation and collaboration on science and research is increasingly important for solving our shared challenges. Promoting women’s full contributions to the society is not an act of charity or a favour to women. It is a must and it benefits everyone… António Guterres (UN Secretary-General) Diversity is not just a buzzword, it's a catalyst for innovation. When diverse minds come together, they bring varied experiences, perspectives and problem-solving approaches. Homogeneity may result in tunnel vision, while diversity broadens the horizon, encouraging out-of-the-box thinking. “The math is simple: Without the insights and creativity of half the world, science and technology will fulfil just half their potential.” By actively promoting diversity, we not just uphold ethical values, but also tap a vast reservoir of talent, insight, and leadership. A diverse industry is a strong and sustainable industry. #diversity #inclusion #sustainability

She is pragmatic and understands how business works and she knows how to create the right incentives for all corporate actors to change their behaviours for the greater good.” ⭐Who are your women champions related to sustainability, nature or climate? Stepping into the First Lady's Pavilion at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) was a privilege that I will forever cherish. The aura of elegance and purpose within those walls was palpable. However, what truly captivated my attention was an exhibition on waste, and the remarkable women, like Dr Tayba Hatimy founder of Baus Taka Taka, who are spearheading innovation in our competitive world. In the midst of this poignant display, I discovered the extraordinary work of Dr. Tayba Hatimy. Her story is a testament to the power of women in leadership, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men. Dr. Hatimy is a trailblazer, a scientist, and an environmentalist committed to addressing waste management challenges in innovative ways. Dr. Hatimy's initiatives were showcased prominently in the exhibition. She has pioneered cutting-edge recycling technologies, developed sustainable waste-to-energy solutions, and championed community-driven waste management programs. Her work not only reduces the environmental footprint but also empowers communities, especially women, to be active participants in waste management. As I left the First Lady's Pavilion at KICC that day, I couldn't help but feel inspired and hopeful. Dr. Tayba Hatimy's story reminded me that in the face of global challenges, there are remarkable women leading the way, breaking barriers, and pioneering solutions. They are not just shaping a competitive world; they are transforming it into a better, more sustainable place for all of us. Dr. Hatimy's work is a beacon of hope, a testament to the incredible potential that exists when passion, innovation, and gender equality intersect on the path to a brighter future. 🌍🌟 #womeninleadership #innovationforchange #wastemanagementsolutions #environmentalsustainability #inspirationalleadership
