Some of you may have already noticed that we have changed the name of our LinkedIn account. Why? In 2022, Alpine Pearls has become a so-called #EGTC and since we mainly want to share B2B content and provide insights into our institutional activities here on LinkedIn, we have now added this information. Wondering what this organisational form means? Here it is: ➡️ EGTC is the acronym for European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation. ➡️ EGTC was set up as a new legal form by the European Union to facilitate and improve cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation between Member States or their regional and local authorities. ➡️ EGTCs implement joint projects on various topics, share expertise and improve coordination of spatial planning. In our case, #AlpinePearls currently unites members from 4 European Alpine countries (Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Germany). They are all committed to the topic of sustainable tourism with a special focus on eco-friendly mobility. Apart from that, we are involved in several projects and working on other related topics such as climate change adaptation in tourism, cooperation with other mountain regions, youth participation or renewable energy communities. While cycling infrastructure is still limited in many #SouthAfrican communities, we firmly believe change is possible with the right policies and investments. As the message from UNESCO highlights, supportive infrastructure and policies are crucial for making bicycles a viable, central mode of transportation. Currently, cyclists in our country often bear the burden of safety due to a lack of dedicated cycling lanes and infrastructure integrated with public transit. However, this should not discourage us. If local governments and institutions are committed to promoting cycling, they must prioritize creating safe, well-designed bicycle routes and protected intersections. Building robust cycling networks sends a powerful message that cyclists belong and enables more people to embrace cycling for transportation, not just leisure. As the Dutch have shown, when cycling becomes ingrained through extensive infrastructure, it transcends being just an activity - it becomes a way of life. While the road ahead has challenges, the long-term benefits of increasing cycling access are immense - reducing emissions, improving health, and enhancing mobility equity. With determination and strategic investments, we can pave the way for South African cities where cycling is as natural as saying, "I'm not a cyclist, I'm just South African." Let's come together to advocate for the institutional changes needed to build the cycling-friendly future our communities deserve. The transformation may take time, but as the saying goes, "Build it well, and they will come." Our vision is achievable if we stay committed.
