This July 2nd, our Spirit Airlines family came together at Spirit Central to honor the red, white, and blue. Our Veterans Resource Group, along with first responders and community officials, led a moving ceremony featuring a Presentation of Colors by the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) and heartfelt speeches from John Bendoraitis, EVP & Chief Operating Officer, and Dania Beach City Commissioner Joyce L. Davis. In a special moment, we unveiled a Spirit plaque dedicated to U.S. service members and first responders, recognizing their unwavering dedication to our nation. This plaque will soon be proudly displayed at the entrance of our Support Center. We invite you to see it and join us in honoring these heroes next time you visit Spirit Central. Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸 #IndependenceDay #Veterans #FirstResponders #SpiritAirlines

ICYMI: My father served 20 years on active duty and retired from the Navy as a Commander; my husband Aaron, served 34 years in the Coast Guard and retired as a Captain. I know how challenging the transition from active duty to civilian life can be - I’ve witnessed it firsthand. For disabled veterans, the process is even more daunting and their caregivers play an important role in the process. Many caregivers are family members or loved ones who take time out of their daily lives to do this much needed work. But right now, caregivers are struggling. 86% of caregivers say their responsibilities have affected their work or education, and only 21% say they feel they can comfortably retire. It’s clear that they need more support! I'm proud that our Easterseals Affiliates are working so hard to support veterans and military families and the caregivers who play such a key role in their lives. But we can only get veterans and their caregivers part of the way to complete success; we need employers to be active partners in this work. When this work integrates with the support and services that many nonprofits provide, we can create a future where veterans and their caregivers feel supported and their service to our nation is recognized and valued. Did you know #veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and #GoldStar Families can obtain a free lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites? Veterans can present one of four forms of acceptable ID (Department of Defense ID Card, Veteran Health ID (VHIC), Veteran ID Card, or veteran’s designation on a state-issued US driver’s license or ID card) at participating federal recreation areas that normally charge an entrance fee. Gold Star Families can obtain information, self-certify they qualify, and download a voucher on NPS.gov Every year, the #NationalParkService offers free entry for all visitors on #VeteransDay (November 11). In addition to the fee waiver, national parks will offer programs, hikes, and other activities. Many national parks have direct connections to the American #military—dozens of battlefields, military parks, and historic sites commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. In addition, every national park is part of our collective identity that defines who we are and where we came from as a nation. They are tactile reminders of the values, the ideals, and the freedoms that our veterans protect. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dhJs6jh

It goes without saying that upstream interventions lead to positive outcomes down stream. Military to civilian transition is a crucial time to connect these service members and their families to available services in housing, health care, employment, education, benefits, and social enrichment. The DoD/VA Liasion Office has agreements with the states to share information that allows local County Veteran Service Officers to better reach transitioning service members. In North Carolina that data is not pushed down to counties. Any effort that doesn’t involve the counties/local communities at the grassroots level is missing the mark! Time for the state to give that contact data to the County Veteran Service Offices (CVSO) and the VA to let us be involved in programs like Solid Start. These things would better enable CVSOs to ensure we connect veterans to services. We need state and national veteran leaders to assist. The CVSOs are ready to work towards a goal of 100% contact with veterans moving back into our communities. Walter E. Gaskin, John Boerstler, Michael (Mike) Odle
Today, Governor Roy Cooper hosted a roundtable discussion on strategies to assist service members with transitioning from active duty to veteran status. The Governor was joined by LtGen Walter E. Gaskin, USMC (Ret.) & North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary, North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders and along with several veterans and local business owners for the discussion. Today is one of the biggest factors as to why I both joined the military and chose to work at Northwestern Mutual and run my practice the way I do. My family, friends, military and civilian alike, my fellow New Yorkers, Pennsylvanians, and Virginians faced an extremely traumatic day 22 years ago. Our military took action against the organization that threatened our Sovereign nation. With my military career wrapping up soon I know a large reason I joined has been fulfilled which comes down to being a great leader, training soldiers to be ready to fight our nations wars, and standing ready to do what is asked. A moment of silence for our men and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Global War On Terrorism. Northwestern Mutual was the company that first started the process of paying out claims amidst the turmoil. A strong American loving company that cares fully about our clients is someone I choose to be behind and I know my clients feel the same. It was not and is still not easy for the surviving families but I know this company made some of the financial worries much easier by doing wholistic planning. I choose to service military and First responders at such a high level due to what they put on line every single day. I ask that as we observe today we remember those in the North and South Towers, those on flight 93 in PA that bravely stopped thousands of more deaths, those in the Pentagon, the first responders that courageously put others before themselves, our men and women in Uniform that fought this organization to maintain our freedom, and a moment of silence as a remembrance. #firstresponders #military #remembering911
