On August 8th, 2023 - the community of Lahaina was changed forever. Several of our clients and friends jumped into action to save the place they call home after wildfires wiped through the town on the island of Maui. Few were as courageous as these folks pictured (and many others who are not) to give their blood, sweat, tears, and every penny they have to contain but help rebuild the community still today. Athelo Group was able to raise over $20k in a week to help in a very small way to those within our direct community who were affected. Last night, Lahaina was honored the the #ESPYs Muhammed Ali Humanitarian Award. While you always wish you could be in a room with the best in the world for other reasons - it will go down as one of my more prouder moments of my professional career. Community has never been more powerful 🤙🏼

ANNOUNCEMENT 📢 KAHANEE and BRIDGE are excited to invite you to join us for a Community Ramadan Iftar: COMMUNITY IFTAR Ramdan Mubarak March 23,2024, at 6:30 pm Location: 78 Princess Street,Winnipeg REGISTRATION REQUIRED at link below. Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, offers a unique opportunity for peacebuilding and connecting with the community. Ramadan promotes self-discipline, empathy, and compassion, fostering a sense of community and understanding among people of different backgrounds. Through fasting, reflection, and acts of charity, Ramadan encourages individuals to prioritize peace, tolerance, and reconciliation, contributing to the overall well-being of society. This Ramdan arrives while conflict in Palestine enters its fifth month. Through breaking fast together, Narratives and Bridge hope to highlight how Ramadan can serve as a catalyst for peace in the world. Despite the challenges facing millions of Palestinians today, observing Ramadan can emphasize the importance of resiliency and empathy, even in the face of adversity. Communities affected by conflict in Palestine often come together during Ramadan, transcending differences and focusing on shared values of compassion and unity. This Iftar is yet another reminder that Canada should provide humanitarian aid and support to those affected by conflict in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, to stand with human life and dignity. https://lnkd.in/gstecgrx

Khanke Camp in Iraq: A Safe Haven for Yazidi Survivors The Khanke camp provides refuge to over 14,000 displaced Yazidis who fled the horrors of the 2014 ISIS genocide. Challenges: The residents of Khanke have experienced unimaginable violence, leading to ongoing physical and psychological scars. Despite efforts by various organizations, resources remain scarce, and mental health support is critically needed. Support: National and international organizations, including AMAR International Charitable Foundation, are working tirelessly to improve living conditions and provide essential services like shelter, food, and medical care. Call to Action: Share this post to raise awareness about the plight of the Yazidi community in Khanke camp. Together, we can amplify their voices and support their journey towards healing and recovery. #KhankeCamp #YazidiGenocide #HumanRights #RefugeeSupport #UNHCR #Iraq Sources: Al Jazeera, UNHCR, Storymaps ArcGIS

*More than 1 in every 74 people on earth have been forced to flee their homes.* ㅤ ❗This staggering statistic means over 110 million people worldwide have been forcibly displaced from their homes. As the genocide in Palestine continues, we are confronted everyday with the disastrous consequences that man-made and environmental catastrophes have on communities around the world. ㅤ 🌎Many refugees are stateless. They can struggle to claim their basic human rights, such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement, and many face a lifetime of obstacles – often not allowed to go to school, see a doctor, get a job, open a bank account, buy a house or even get married.🤝 ㅤ ❗It is important that we remind ourselves of how we can act by sharing, donating, advocating, volunteering to ensure that this statistic does not remain unchanged. ✊ ㅤ More than 1 in every 74 people on earth have been forced to flee their homes, and this is not okay. ㅤ #Refugees #Palestine #Gaza #StopTheWarOnChildren #GlocalRoots #Raisingawareness #FreePalestine ㅤ Source: UNHCR

In Islam, charity isn't just an option; it's a fundamental pillar of faith, embodying the spirit of compassion and solidarity. Zakat, mandated by Allah, serves as a mechanism for redistributing wealth and supporting the less fortunate. Today, as we navigate a world fraught with challenges, from poverty and conflict to pandemics and natural disasters, the need for charity has never been greater. Our zakat and donations have the power to transform lives, offering hope and relief to those facing hardship. Let's embrace the teachings of Islam and extend a helping hand to those in need. Together, through our acts of charity and compassion, we can build a world where no one suffers in silence, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive. https://ashrafulaid.org/ Join www.ashrafulaid.ca in spreading the message of Islamic charity. The situation in Gaza is deeply desperate, with 1.1m people having been forced to leave their homes. There are indications of ongoing challenges that may lead to more people being displaced and facing a prolonged period of humanitarian need. It is crucial that humanitarian considerations and the well-being of all individuals involved are given the utmost priority. https://lnkd.in/ejX2zAyM The Gaza Sunbirds are a Para-cycling team on the ground that has rerouted all its resources to support members of the community. In support of the Sunbirds, I endeavour to complete the Arctic Circle Rat Race. This consists of a 3 day expedition across the Scandinavian Tundra containing multi disciplines such as cycling, cross country ski and arctic mountaineering, not to mention wild camping in torrid conditions. I will be pushing myself to new limits in a bid to inspire as many people to help in any small way they can. Many family's continue to lose loved ones, children are being lost to the world and innocents are at the hands of Genocide. The Gaza Strip has been at the centre of 5 wars since 2008, and has been under ongoing siege since 2007. This has complicated any attempt to improve the lives of roughly 2 million Palestinians constricted in an area no larger than 365 km². For its over 3000 amputees residents (one of the highest rates of amputation in the world), opportunities are even scarcer. Please give as much as you can, however small. You can follow any training and fundraising progress across my socials as well as our new YouTube Channel "Dad Active". All funds will be directly sent to the Gaza Sunbirds via their charity registry The Amos trust. https://lnkd.in/enVc7ZNj Equally, If any of our friends in the sporting industry are able to help by sponsoring, there is of course an extensive list of kit required for such an undertaking. #freepalestine #freepalestinenow #freepalestinefromisrael #gazaceasefire

Refugees ~ Individuals who have been forced to flee their home countries due to persecution, conflict, or violence. They embark on treacherous journeys, often leaving behind everything they know and love in pursuit of safety and a chance at a better life. The refugee crisis often compels the host country's citizens to reevaluate their moral compass! First and foremost, the refusal of refuge goes against the principles of compassion and empathy that form the bedrock of human values. Our shared responsibility as global citizens is to extend a helping hand to those in need, irrespective of their nationality, race, or religion. Moreover, refusing to help them also neglects the long-term benefits of integration. Historically, many refugees have made significant contributions to their host countries, becoming essential members of their communities, rebuilding their lives, and, in turn, contributing to their adopted home's economic and social development. The decision not to refuse refugees is not just a matter of policy but a moral imperative. Mission Chetna urges people to uphold the principles of compassion, empathy and shared responsibility. In the picture is a Sikh refugee from Pakistan who was provided employment by Chetna Hero Hari Om Sahoo. Not only does Hariom vouch for their integrity, but he also established informal schools to help the children get acclimated to our country and culture. To this day, his guarantee has helped more than 300 people get jobs in restaurants, garages, and construction sites! • Mission Chetna is a movement of Spreading Goodness by recognizing, appreciating, and supporting those real-life heroes of society, who have made a resolve to make this world a better place. Re-Defining Philanthropy Sadaqa, or #voluntaryphilanthropy, is a cornerstone of Islamic practice and a prominent value within Somali communities. This focus goes beyond random acts of kindness. It fosters a spirit of mutual support, where neighbors help each other through challenges. This is deeply embedded in the social fabric of Somali society. #Philanthropy doesn't always require material wealth. Many acts of generosity come from individuals with limited resources, who offer their time (Waqti), strength (Xoog), and action (Waxqabad). “It is deep-rooted within the Somali tradition that the community helps each other when a crisis occurs; this is what we stand for as a group.” Khadija from Dhanaha Group in an IDP Camp in Badhan District, Sanaag Region #LocalSolutions: Adeso's Saxansaxo Approach Adeso's Saxansaxo approach prioritizes community ownership in humanitarian response. It recognizes the inherent generosity within communities and strengthens their efforts through microgrants. This approach fosters collective resilience and co-creates with communities to build a brighter sustainable future. Every year seems like a big one in the humanitarian aid realm, but in 2022, we faced unparalleled challenges. Declining security situations in most areas we work, fallout from Taliban takeover, and resumption of conflict in South Sudan, Sudan, & DRC. Displacement is at an all-time high, and food security is untenable. War Child exists to offer lasting alternatives to the brutality of conflict. Though the world is messy, we are far from powerless. War Child USA is an independent not-for-profit affiliated with and providing financial support to similarly named charitable organizations in Canada (War Child Canada), Holland (War Child Holland) and the United Kingdom (War Child UK). Though independent entities, each organization is devoted to protecting children and their families in conflict zones by raising awareness about the impact of war on local communities.
