The Magical Magnificent Malcolm Hall Malcom Hall for me is a revered place of learning. Here, the young minds of students passionate to learn about the majesty of the law, are hammered, formed and molded to become ‘great lawyers.’ UP College of Law students entering the hallowed halls of Malcolm are subjected daily to the rigors of the Socratic Method, made to think on their own 2 feet through relentless graded recitations, trying to convince their professors that they no longer have ‘skulls full of mush,’ but have begun ‘to think like a lawyer.’ I happen to be one of these professors. But I cringe every time that lofty title of ‘professor’ is used to call my attention. That’s why, whenever I am asked, I just say I’m a law lecturer. Perhaps, one can call it imposter syndrome since I always feel undeserving of such title. Yes, I have been practicing law for 30 years, in an esoteric field called structured finance and banking law. But what I do everytime I enter Malcolm Hall is really just sharing of my views on the law, everyday experience in the workplace, or encounters with customers or fellow law practitioners. At best, I give a lecture of the issues we have resolved, or the negotiations we have successfully concluded. Being able to discuss these issues or negotiations with students who read through the cases and laws assigned to them, always leads to refreshing insights which even I, supposedly a ‘seasoned law practitioner,’ have never heretofore realized. Thus, the lecturer is not really a professor, but in the end also a learner, just like the students. Both the lecturer and the students become learners in this majestic process of learning that takes place every day and every night in the Magical Magnificent Malcolm Hall. #bankingandfinance #lawlecturer #professor #2ndSemester #UPLaw

NLUs are cultivating a breed of money making machines in the name of lawyers. If someone has to pay obscene amounts of money for her graduation, she will inevitably choose to work at a corporate law firm to have a better return on investment despite the probable toil and sometimes toxic workplace environment. The ultimate casualty is the freedom of choice amongst fresh graduates, who are unable to opt for litigation. Besides, litigation seniors also need to pay their juniors reasonably well so that the world of litigation does not suffer from a scholarship deficit. I don't mean to say that lawyers who are not from NLUs are not good enough. It's just that each law graduate brings in his or her own distinct experience to the Court and NLUs produce one of the best legal minds. It's just that one needs some time to polish and hone their skills in litigation. It is very unlikely for an NLU graduate to choose litigation even if she wants due to the extended gestation period. #law #lawyer #NLU #advocate

Yesterday I had the privilege and responsibility to speak to the 180 person 1L Introduction to Lawyering class at the University of Florida - Fredric G. Levin College of Law on the topic of The Future of the Legal Profession - including their professors (no pressure). As we are all seeing - the legal profession is going through a dramatic and accelerating transformation. I spoke to the class about the rise of innovative alternative legal service providers, legal management consulting, “intelligent” legal tech platforms, and the legal roles of the future. My job - as always in this situation - was to accelerate these students' careers, avoid impostor syndrome in a rapidly changing profession - and help them choose career paths that will be impactful. Major credit to UF Law and in particular Associate Dean Sabrina Lopez for innovation in legal eduction. Freshman Year (2015) versus eight and half years out and counting…Is being a lawyer aging me faster than normal? In my first eight years, I have learned a few things, but no doubt have much more to learn. Some of what I have learned: (1) Law school sure does drop the ball on teaching about business development and the everyday practice of law; (2) There are too many lawyers who are deeply dissatisfied with their career; (3) Learning the Rule against Perpetuties in law school is the equivalent of learning how to input sine and cosine into a TI-84 calculator in high school; (4) The practice of law is 80% business, 20% art.
