New research by the British Chambers of Commerce’s (BCC) Insights Unit has uncovered the scale of the impact on UK businesses caused by the disruption to shipping in the Red Sea. Almost two fifths (37%) of more than 1,000 firms surveyed overall for the research said they had been impacted – with exporters, manufacturers and B2C businesses (which include retailers and wholesalers) far more likely to report an impact. Anne White, Head of International Trade and Compliance at Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce said: “”This important research from the BCC sheds light on the immediate impacts of Red Sea disruption on UK businesses. “While spare shipping capacity has provided a buffer, prolonged challenges could escalate costs, with certain sectors more vulnerable, and further exacerbated by new customs checks. Great to give the keynote on the economic outlook on behalf of St.George Bank at the International Forwarders & Customs Brokers Association of Australia Ltd. (IFCBAA) National Annual Conference in Cairns. Supply-chain disruptions have for some time recovered from the covid crisis, but recently there have been fresh challenges around #geopolitics. The cost of international #shipping has shot up from the effects of the disruptions in the Red Sea. Shipowners travelling between Asia and Europe are having to take a longer route around Africa. Managing #inventory well and being proactive remains important for businesses, including by bringing forward stock orders where needed. Canadian-owned Saputo Dairy, now the name behind Cathedral City and Wensleydale Creamery, embodies the challenge we face. When foreign entities acquire British firms, profits are extracted from our economy, and our export potential diminishes. It's a cycle that can stifle our proud cheesemaking heritage.
