Today in 1926, #ACMTuringAward recipient Fernando J. Corbato was born. He received the award in 1990 for his pioneering work organizing the concepts and leading the development of the general-purpose, large-scale, time-sharing and resource-sharing computer systems, CTSS and Multics. In the late 1950s, computers were used by one person at a time and required advance signups. The concept of "time-sharing" emerged, allowing multiple users to connect to a computer simultaneously, with the system switching rapidly between programs. Corbato helped develop the first Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS), demonstrating its efficiency and community-building potential. This concept evolved into Multics and eventually UNIX, which is still in use today. In this video, Corbato described developing the CTSS prototype: https://bit.ly/3KFKXYU Let's remember him #OTD
