Business consultants say, “Don’t try to boil the ocean; pick manageable objectives.” Well, we have figured out how to boil the oceans; just keep on doing what we have been doing. To reduce the temperature of the Atlantic by one degree over ten years may be necessary for survival of the ecosystems. How does one even begin, Eva Goulbourne, to achieve such a goal? #wickedproblems

At the Conference of Valuing Water Initiative, we delved into a pressing question: How can Agência Nacional de Águas e Saneamento Básico (ANA) and the value of water be more visible and recognized within the Brazilian government, especially amidst budget cuts? ☝ Using the Social Presencing Theater method developed by Presencing Institute, I facilitated a 4D mapping exercise to uncover hidden dynamics. Roles representing key elements in the system (e.g., president, ministry of environment, São Francisco River Basin, financial security, poor people) revealed a familiar yet shocking picture: a strong disconnect between political leadership and realities on the ground. The Sao Fransisco River Basin, symbolizing water, was distant, while the most affected poor people laid on the floor being neglected. 💧 When the system moved towards an emergent future, interestingly financial security became a unifying factor, the vulnerable sought visibility, and the river became more central in the picture. This shift transformed a disconnected system into a unified one, though the Ministry of Cities remained far away– a topic for future exploration. 🤔 Social Presencing Theater can be a great tool for clients to gain insights into their system by slowing down, tapping into intuition, and revealing unseen patterns. This allows us to sense and presence the emerging opportunities within a system. 🙏 Grateful for the engaged participants, the well-defined case by Fernanda Abreu Oliveira de Souza and Ana Carolina Argolo Nascimento, and the vibrant conference atmosphere. Special thanks to Iris Bijlsma and Floor Crispijn for their trust and invitation! Curious about this method?
