⚽ Do you know where the idea for the football net was dreamt up? Right here in the North West! After watching a dispute over a disallowed goal during an October 1889 football match between Everton and Accrington, civil engineer John Alexander Brodie came up with a solution to use a net to catch the football after it passed through the goal posts. 🥅 In 1890, Brodie patented the invention, and it was soon adopted by the Football Association (FA). How can we meet the future requirements for halving the climate impact in new construction? 🏗 The independent report from IVL shows that cast-in-place concrete frames with semi-precast from Thomas Betong AB can achieve 200 kg CO2e/m² gross area. – The report that came out last autumn shows that with our low-carbon precast products in combination with our low-carbon concrete Thomagrön, we can meet future requirements for new construction. There is actually further potential if, for example, the construction is optimized. And that without compromising on the sound class, which can actually be a challenge in other building systems," says Mats Karlsson, product manager at Thomas Betong. I found the discussion to be really educational and it got me thinking what role specifications have in the product selection and construction of wall assemblies (and other 'systems' made up of multiple products too). What role should building codes play and do we need some type of oversight or 'rules' that dictate or monitor such an important part of the construction, rather than an 'industry led' approach to best practice? It seems pretty obvious to anyone that knows what they're looking at when driving past a jobsite, if shortcuts are being taken with the wall assembly. Shortcuts it would seem that aren't being caught or enforced by inspectors because they keep happening. Rules (in every aspect of life) are always written because of those that can't put the good of the people over the good of themselves. It's why we have Building Codes in the first place! Its difficult to blame everything on the GC who's incentivized by a system to cut costs and build as quickly as possible. So what's the solution? I'm interested to know from the spec writers out there... are you including manufacturer's full 3-part specifications in your projects? If you use your own templates or masters, how are you ensuring compatible products for assemblies are being selected and installed correctly to prevent failures later in the life of the building? To the contractors and tradies... how often do you refer back to the specification during construction of assemblies (do you even have access to the specification on the jobsite)? How much work is done based on your previous years of experience or an 'it's how we've always done it' sort of philosophy?
A big thank you to Cole Hansen from KLAD Envelope Solutions for presenting to me and the others in attendance at last night's Okanagan Valley Construction Specifications Canada | Devis de Construction Canada Chapter meeting. It was great to learn about a part of the build where the science is often misunderstood or shortcuts are taken during the construction of the wall system itself. It really got me thinking about a part of the process I hadn't put much thought into before, and how as an industry we could overcome these challenges when the system encourages shortcuts to be taken. Thank you Cole!
