This #PTSDAwarenessDay, we're acknowledging the ways sexual violence can cause profound psychological, emotional, and physical effects on survivors. These effects can be deeply traumatic, but with the right help and support, they can be managed. At Tia, we stand with survivors of sexual violence and are committed to creating safe and supportive environments for everyone who seeks our care. ❤️ Read more about how we provide trauma-informed care and support for survivors in our interview with Tia's Chief Clinical Officer, Jessica Horwitz, MSN FNP-C. #traumainformedcare

Interview with Dr. Judith Herman: Listening to What Survivors Need to Address Sexual Trauma and Complex PTSD: " For survivors of sexual trauma, repair lies in recognition, not revenge. In our current model of justice, however, victims are often abandoned to heal any way they can within a societal structure that fosters the conditions for their abuse. One researcher believes that the path toward collective recovery begins with a simple act: listening to the wisdom of survivors. Trauma rates within the workforce are notably high. Having worked in both the nonprofit sector and Corporate America, I can confidently assert that corporations tend to be better equipped to support their employees' mental health needs. This is often achieved through Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) tailored to address such concerns. An impactful example from my personal experience occurred when my aunt was battling heart disease and was dying. Thanks to the employee benefit program at AETNA# CVS Health, which included therapy sessions through #Talkspace, I could proactively prepare for her passing without enduring undue trauma. Even after transitioning to a nonprofit role following my tenure at Aetna, I was surprised to discover that they only offered two therapy sessions. This realization challenged the notion that corporate America uniformly neglects employee well-being. It's imperative that we prioritize the mental health of our workforce across all sectors. Prevention remains paramount in fostering a supportive and resilient workplace culture.
I still have #PTSD from getting shot in my 20s and years of abuse as a teen. But I had no idea how prevalent #trauma is in the US. 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives, and 5% suffer from PTSD at any point. Psychological trauma has risen over the past few years because of the #pandemic. A national report released in 2023 by the American Psychological Association found Americans are still struggling with the collective trauma of COVID. This is due to the loss of more than one million Americans, shifting priorities at work, school, and culture, as well as increased financial pressures for families. Over the past year, there has been an increased focus on trauma, resilience, and trauma-informed care. Here’s a few examples: California is pairing trained volunteers with #victims and their families within the first few hours following a tragedy. The service provider will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including holidays) to send volunteers to assist sheriff deputies, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and hospital personnel with various support services. Colorado engages Peer Support Specialists with lived experience to help patients with guidance, reassurance, and encouragement through trauma-informed care. Connecticut works collaboratively to provide #communitymentalhealth programs to eliminate barriers to access to resources and provide dignity to residents experiencing housing instability and #homelessness. Dozens more states from Arizona to Wyoming are also taking initial steps toward trauma-informed care. All this activity is encouraging and cuts across party lines. It’s a trend to watch. #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth
