Let's hop into the fascinating world of hops! Hops, those green cones, are like the spice of beer, and they've been around for ages, evolving into unique varieties. They're grown between the 35th and 55th latitudes, and each region gives hops its distinct flavor. Inside the hop cone, there's a magical substance called lupulin that holds the secret to beer's bitterness and aroma. The alpha acids in lupulin determine the hops' bittering power, ranging from mild to intense. Now, about those aromatic oils! Hops come in different national flavors - German hops are herbal, English hops are spicy with a hint of fresh grass, and American hops can be piney and resinous. The choice of hops can make or break a beer's character. Speaking of character, there's a group of noble European hops, like Saaz and other German classics, known for their aroma in lager beers. Hops are versatile; some are super bitter, while others bring pleasant aromas to the table. Brewers keep inventing new hop varieties to keep things exciting. When adding hops to your brew, timing is everything. Boil them vigorously to extract bitterness, and the longer you boil, the more bitter it gets. Be careful not to overdo it. Want flavor and aroma? Add hops during the boil's last minutes. You can even toss them in after fermentation(dry-hopping) for that extra hoppy punch! Monasteries brewed special beers for Easter celebrations, as it was a time of feasting and rejoicing after the fasting period of Lent. Lenten Restrictions: During Lent, Christians traditionally abstained from consuming meat and dairy products, but they were allowed to drink beer, which was considered a liquid food. Thus, brewing beer became an important activity during this time. Bock Beer: Bock beer, a strong lager of German origin, is often associated with Easter. It was historically brewed by German monks to sustain them during their Lenten fasts. Bock beers are still commonly brewed and enjoyed during the Easter season. Spring Brewing: Easter falls during the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere, which historically marked the beginning of the brewing season. 𝗗𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗛 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲? A little bit of practical knowledge at the end of the day to celebrate German Beer Day: We measured it once with our Portavo and a pH sensor SE555 and show here our measurement results for different beers: • a dark beer from Berlin • a wheat beer from southern Germany and a • alcohol-free Pilsner from northern Germany. 𝗙𝗮𝘇𝗶𝘁: There are differences, but they are not very big. 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.😜 This is not great for enjoyment, but this doesn't matter for the measurement, because the Portavo transmitter compensates for the temperature to determine the correct pH value. Before you go absolutely dry I think there are opportunities to explore moderation… or at least if you don’t want to ruin your January effort on the 1st of Feb… here are some other options for you! - We usually behave in drink units. A glass, a bottle, a can. Smaller unit size formats are great options and... how cute! - Fruit beers are often lower in alcohol. Radlers are 50/50 beer and lemonade around 2.5% abv, shandies are on the 4% mark and they are not all sweet and childish! I know 4% abv is still a thing but if your daily after work is a Double Hazy or an Imperial Stout this is still a great step!. - The beer mid strength category is big in Australia. Beers are simply tagged "Mid" and clock in at about 3.5%. I can't wait to see such an intermediate category grow worldwide. - Look for the word Easy or Session... both are expressions of a beer style at a lower than normal strength! The chemical compounds that are responsible for the myriad aromas and flavors we love in our beer are variously activated and suppressed according to temperature. Warmth usually makes a flavor more perceptible, while cold tends to suppress it. Many microbrew enthusiasts point out one major reason to drink you beer warmer: the flavor! If your predilections lean toward mass-produced lagers with the word “lite” somewhere in the name, then yes, you will definitely want to keep those things as cold as the natural laws of the universe will permit. But when it comes to craft ales and lagers, there really is no good one-size-fits-all temperature. And even if there were, it probably wouldn’t be ice cold. Basically, making things very cold is done usually to hide the flavors of the drink. If you want to really taste the beer, drink it close to room temperature, and some is better even a little warmer than that. All of this aside though, don’t ever let anyone tell you that the way you drink your beer is wrong.
