If you're looking into building a digital health platform, I think The Medical Futurist offers a pretty good check list here. Having said that I also think it comes with it's challenges, if you look at it from a funding perspective. Because if you are to go with tip number 1 - Go for a niche - you need to be ready to explain to your investors, just what you know of this market and how it works that will enable you to be successful in getting the product out there AND capture sufficient market share to make the math work from a returns point-of-view. This is no mean feat. In fact it may be the biggest funding challenge for a digital health startup looking to do this. So don't take it to lightly. It is such a crazy time to be building a digital health company -- on the one hand, there is SO much excitement about the space, so many opportunities for technology to make improvements, and so many exceptional people jumping in heads first. And yet, the market is pretty dismal for funding, exits and outcomes. In my view, survival is key right now -- and may be one of the best ways to make it through this storm. 📢 Babylon's Chapter 7 filing is a reminder to digital health entrepreneurs... all that glitters (especially in a frothy 2021 VC market) isn't gold. 🪙🪙 Rumors of Babylon's troubles have swirled among insiders for years, but on the outside? Splashy on stage speeches by its founder, huge valuations, a heralded SPAC deal, and massive sponsorships at all the top conferences. And now? 💥🗑️😓 Of course, every story has a story behind it, and I'm sure we'll learn more about (and hopefully learn from) where things went left as time passes, but in the meantime, here is what I'm taking away: 1️⃣ A charismatic leader is an incredible asset, but don't forget about the fundamentals. Passion can't make the numbers work. Profitability isn't necessary from day 1, but it should be realistically on the roadmap. Today's investors are watching a bit more closely...👩⚕️💻 2️⃣ Diversify your customer mix. The loss of a single massive contract can spell disaster if you haven't hedged with other customers or revenue streams, and seems to have done so in this case. 🌐 3️⃣ Value-based models are HARD, even with cutting edge #RPM and #AI-powered tech. These deals should be made very carefully to hedge risk. A "walk before you run" approach is anathema in startup culture... but healthcare is a whole different beast. 🚀 This unfortunate ending underscores the dynamic nature of the digital health industry, where companies are fighting to continuously adapt to changing landscapes. It's a reminder that innovation and sustainability in healthcare require a delicate balance. This is hard, folks.
