Breaking news❗: Social media firms will finally be held to account for failing to crack down on animal cruelty content, following the passing of the #onlinesafetybill in the #houseoflords today. Once Royal Assent has been given, this important Bill will mean that social media platforms are responsible for proactively taking steps to tackle and remove illegal content, including animal cruelty and abuse. Failure to do so could see firms face fines of up to £18 million. Inflicting abuse on any creature should not be tolerated and we hope that this Bill will pass into law this autumn as anticipated, to put a stop to this barbaric content spreading across social media, a vital step in the ongoing fight against animal abuse. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child #UNCRC recognises that witnessing violence towards #animals is damaging to the next generation, making particular reference to societal violence against #dogs and the public shooting of dogs; another reason why the #culling of dogs in streets must cease globally. Bullfighting is a prime example of public violence which the Committee stated countries should protect children from witnessing to avoid harmful effects on child development. Cats must be protected from cruelty because they are thinking, feeling, and sentient beings who never deserve to suffer. That is true and vitally important whether or not their suffering impacts humans. But the fact is animal cruelty DOES have a strong link to harm to people and our society as a whole. Our laws and policies must acknowledge that as well.
