By the looks of this math, my Era's Tour ticket from last year DOES officially make me Swifty! 🎵 I've found myself more and more saving my entertainment budget for a few concerts I really care about and sitting right up front(ish), rather than allocating that across a greater number of live shows to be further back. It's my M.O., and I'm fascinated by Billboard's recent coverage of Live Nation Entertainment's push on premium experiences for superfans. It resonates with that consumer preference and trend in the market. "Emphasis on superfans makes sense in an era of high priced primary tickets that capture value that would otherwise go to a secondary market. Artists are increasingly willing to charge more upfront than to lose money to resellers. Still the secondary ticket is almost twice the price of a primary ticket. [To increase revenue] Live Nation is upgrading the concert experience." TWICE the price for resell (at least) is staggering, and it's something many searching for that last ticket are very familiar with. Leaning into the superfan market with a knock-em-dead experience makes sense. Data-Driven Decision Making: A Business Analysis Case Study for Screamin' Blues Jays' Concert As a business analyst, I recently worked with Screamin' Blues Jays, a renowned music band, to help them make an informed decision about their upcoming concert. The band's management team was uncertain whether to embark on the show, given the costs and potential revenue. The Screamin' Blue Jays, which will go on tour across the United States. The tour costs $5.5 million to fund and develop. There will be 5 concerts per week and he project the band to be on the road for 30 weeks. The average cost to rent different venues on tour is $1000 per show. Tickets will sell at $50 each. he also earn an average of $1.50 profit per ticket from concession sales. Each venue has a maximum capacity of 800 seats and he is expecting 80% of the seats to be full.  In this article, I'll walk you through the business analysis process, using Microsoft Excel and What-If Analysis to predict the show's profit. Problem Statement: Screamin' Blues Jays' management team approached me with the following questions: - Should we proceed with the concert, considering the estimated costs and potential revenue? - What are the key - How can we maximize our profit while minimizing risk? Data Collection and Analysis: To address these questions, I gathered data on the following variables: - Estimated ticket sales - Ticket prices - Venue rental costs - Sound and lighting expenses - Marketing and advertising costs - Merchandise sales Using Microsoft Excel, I created a comprehensive financial model to analyze the data and perform What-If Analysis. What-If Analysis: To predict the show's profit, I used Excel's What-If Analysis tool to simulate different scenarios based on various assumptions, such as: - Different ticket sales scenarios (e.g., 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 100% capacity) - Varying ticket prices - Changes in costs (e.g., venue rental, sound and lighting) This analysis allowed me to visualize the impact of each scenario on the show's profit. Results and Recommendations: Based on the analysis, I presented the following findings and recommendations to the band's management team: the band will be on lost if the shows attendance is 80%, with the total cost of $5,650,000 and total revenue of $4,944,000 making total profit loss of $(706,000) if the re attendance for the show is 91% there won't be any profit. the only way to generate profit is extending days of the show and having more than 91% attendance to be on a profit. the team will need to work more publicity. Conclusion: By using data-driven analysis and What-If Analysis in Microsoft Excel, we were able to make an informed decision about the concert. This approach allowed us to identify the key drivers of profit and optimize our strategy to maximize revenue while minimizing risk. US Sues To Break Up Ticketmaster Owner, Live Nation: The Justice Department on Thursday said it was suing Live Nation Entertainment [non-paywalled link], the concert giant that owns Ticketmaster, asking a court to break up the company over claims it illegally maintained a monopoly in the live entertainment industry. From a report: In the lawsuit, which is joined by 29 states and the District of Columbia, the government accuses Live Nation of dominating the industry by locking venues into exclusive ticketing contracts, pressuring artists to use its services and threatening its rivals with financial retribution. Those tactics, the government argues, have resulted in higher ticket prices for consumers and have stifled innovation and competition throughout the industry. "It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster," Merrick Garland, the attorney general, said in a statement announcing the suit, which is being filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit is a direct challenge to the business of Live Nation, a colossus of the entertainment industry and a force in the lives of musicians and fans alike. The case, filed 14 years after the government approved Live Nation's merger with Ticketmaster, has the potential to transform the multibillion-dollar concert industry. Live Nation's scale and reach far exceed those of any competitor, encompassing concert promotion, ticketing, artist management and the operation of hundreds of venues and festivals around the world. I have recently been working with an organization called Women Who Rock™ to conduct a brand valuation. The power of associating live music to a sponsor brand can raise brand value exponentially. In some cases a factor of 9x to revenue generated or money invested. Who doesn’t want a 9x ROMI? This is especially true when the missions align across the event and the partners. Ticketmaster owner Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:LYV) exceeded fourth-quarter revenue expectations, driven by robust concert demand during the holiday season. Both advertising and ticket revenues surged during the period as the post-pandemic trend of consumers increasing their spending on leisure continued. Concerts from artists like Jennifer Lopez and Sean Paul are scheduled for 2024, but the company warned that growth will be more weighted to the second half. Total sales increased by 36% during the fourth quarter to US$5.84 billion, outpacing estimates of US$4.79 billion. Some US$4.9 billion of the sales was generated through merchandise and the production of live music events, while a further US$740 million came from ticketing.
