Jeanette Winterson I’m enjoying the #OxfamReadingChallenge so much this year. 😊 I keep a record of the books I’ve read. When I’ve finished a book, I take it to the charity shop, or give it to a friend, so that someone else can enjoy it. This helps me with my decluttering programme too (except when I buy more). 😄 The theme for April was Short Stories – and the challenge was to read a short story collection. So, I bought two books of short stories from Oxfam: ⭐ The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher by Hilary Mantel and ⭐ A Certain Age by Lynne Truss Both of which confirmed that each short story contained what the Papertrue blog says are the five elements of a short story: plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme. In fact, I learned that NOT saying everything, can be both revealing and intriguing to the reader. I love what Claudia Hammond says about reading in The Keys to Kindness “Reading, fiction in particular, allows us to see perspectives other than our own, which teaches us empathy and which in turn increases mutual kindness.” After reading the short story collections, I then read three murder mysteries by Ann Cleeves, Richard Osman and Robert Galbraith😆 And so, on to the next challenge - the challenge for May is ‘New Release’ – to find and read a second-hand new release. This post was inspired by Jordan Robinson, MBA. He said that he likes my LinkedIn posts to include selfies. So here I am turning this feedback into action. What’s the point of this picture? Tomer Moked got me this book for my birthday. And I LOVE it. Tomer and I were meant to be friends - we “ideate” alike! ☺️ This book is also one I gift others — usually my kids’ friends. (But now I have to “copy” Tomer and gift to adults too!) And it started with Frankie M. Piccirilli, who is the one who first bought it for my daughter. The lesson is that everything starts with an idea. In my line of work, everyone wants to raise money. The question I always ask is for what… The what is the idea… The idea that solves a problem… a world problem. The what can change the world. Here’s what I have learned after 15 years in philanthropy: There’s no shortage of money; there’s a shortage of ideas. This book is a children’s book but it’s also a great leadership book. Actually, most children’s books are #leadership books. There’s always a moral — a lesson — to the story. #umnetworking #networking #purpose #innovation

My 10-year old was being unusually quiet on the car ride home, pondering deeply while he gazed out the window. Suddenly he remarked, "Mom, I have to become rich." "Why, Orion?" "Because we don't have enough money to help everyone that needs it." **** Orion and his 7 year old brother Wyatt had spent winter break researching charitable needs of kids around the world. They each advocated for three causes they wanted to fund out of our family's donation fund. The debate got heated at times. I wish I had recorded their conversation...I cry each time I reflect on it. When Wyatt would challenge Orion about one of his proposals and present a perspective that Orion hadn't considered, Orion would grow quiet, reflect internally on his previous assumptions, and then course-correct when he saw that Wyatt's point was valid. He would willingly drop his own proposal if he saw his brother had a proposal that aligned with our family's values to a greater degree. Wyatt would do the same when Orion would challenge him. The boys finally agreed on funding a set of citrus fruit trees for a South American family because the trees would provide food and clean air for the current generation, along with income from citrus sales for the children's education to improve the family's economic mobility. The proposal met our family's criteria for sustainability, stewardship, empowering economic mobility and making multi-generational impact. Orion and Wyatt then each wrote letters to our family's future generations to explain why they had chosen to invest our funds into the fruit trees, and their hopes for how our future generations will continue to wisely steward and multiply the resources we've been blessed with. I'm sharing our 2023 family report here as one example of how other families can engage in philanthropy while giving their children opportunities to lead. It doesn't take millions of dollars...in fact, one could argue that it's even more impactful when a young child is thinking about funding proposals at a scale that is relatable to his or her day to day experiences with money. As they cultivate and refine their mental decision-making framework at the level of $15-$100 dollars, they can then experiment with scaling that impact into hundreds and then thousands of dollars.
