I am on the board at CKM Preparedness Foundation. We were very lucky that city, county, state governments were prepared for what happened yesterday. Here in The OC we had minimal flooding, no deaths, no one sitting on their roofs to get saved. Being Prepared worked. Please read this story about why this home was saved. This is what CKM Preparedness Foundation is all about. We are in uncharted territory. What happened in Maui and now California that over the weekend had a Hilary, a wildfire, AND an earthquake more than every mitigation and preparedness have reached a new urgency. This house was saved because of a metal rook and rock around the perimeter of the house. This is what preparedness and non-preparedness looks like. Just the rock alone could have saved ths house. Even just creating a barrier around your home where there is no foliage, and using non-wood, fire retartent materials for decks and roofs can can go a long way in protecting your home.https://lnkd.in/gNzh4XhJ#Maui #CKM Preparedness Foundation #Fire #preparedness #disasterpreparedness #wildfires #floods #earthquake#Maui#preparedness#disasterpreparedness#ckmpreparednessfoundation#BePreparedBeReady#hurricane#wildfires

The Resiliency Initiative has a diverse client base with projects ranging from program design, plan development, and employee trainings. Current clients include a state-level emergency management agency, a county-level public health department, a utility agency, a Native American Tribe, a credit union, a coffee roasting company, and several local municipalities and nonprofits. Below is a recent example of our work with a disaster relief agency. Project: Develop an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). The client requested assistance with the creation of an EOP. The client is a disaster relief agency that provides essential services across the US immediately following a disaster. Additionally, TRI wrote a childcare annex addressing the needs of children and families impacted by disasters, which the nonprofit shares with partner city and county agencies to be included in their EOP. Understanding the unique needs and characteristics of the client's organization was crucial for this effort. The nonprofit’s mobile and dynamic nature required a different approach than traditional fixed-location EOPs. TRI leveraged its tailored approach to create an all-hazards plan, taking into account flexibility in location and partner-driven operations, highlighting the need for adaptability in disaster planning. #Resiliency #EmergencyResponse #CrisisManagement

As we finish up Emergency Preparedness Month, did you and your family take steps to become better prepared? do1thing asked that you make sure you, your family, or community are INFORMED in preparing for, during, or after an emergency/disaster. ✅ Warning sirens may be activated at different times for different reasons, did you contact your local fire department to find out what each siren (time/day) means and when should you take cover? ✅ What other ways will local emergency management personnel warn of dangers? ✅ Did you invest in a NOAA Emergency Alert Radio? These radios can be used to warn about dangerous situations like tornado, hurricane, or chemical spill and in order to take shelter or other safe actions. ✅ Did you develop a plan for those who have challenges in communicating such as assistive hearing devices, hearing impaired/sign language, or non-English speaking. If you think you or someone in your family or neighborhood will struggle with receiving instructions/information, please identify someone to assist before, during, and after a disaster. do1thing is a non-profit organization, based in Lansing, that promotes emergency preparedness for individuals and businesses. The goal is to build disaster-resilient communities by using a whole community approach to preparedness. As we emerge out of National Preparedness Month, recognized in September, FEMA has introduced a Disaster Preparedness Guide for Older Adults. The Guide is intended to support both older adults and their caregivers in preparing for disasters and emergencies through three key steps, which include: 1. Assess your needs 2. Create a plan 3. Engage your support network The Guide stems from insights provided during a Disaster Preparedness and Older Adults National Summit held with FEMA’s Employee Resource Group, federal partners, and community-based organizations earlier this year. The Guide will continue to be provided in additional languages in coming months. Take a look at the guide and share with your network here: https://lnkd.in/g2ZAJJEU. #NationalPreparednessMonth #FEMA #EmergencyManagement

Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies: #WEAAD2024 On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let's tell a story. Just 12 days ago, the North Coast of KZN was devastated by a tornado, causing unthinkable damage as it tore through the community of Tongaat. These natural disasters are becoming increasingly common, and as we navigate the impact of climate change, it's crucial to spotlight the needs of vulnerable groups, including the elders in our community. This year's theme for WEAAD 2024, "Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies," is more relevant than ever. In preparing disaster management plans, emergency preparedness activities, and executing relief operations, the needs of older persons must be considered. Beyond this consideration is the critical importance of having older people at the table as these plans are being devised. Their meaningful participation ensures that the plans made are practical, impactful, and have a higher chance of success. Each of us has a role to play, whether it’s educating ourselves about their needs or co-creating solutions. What remains fundamental is that older people must be centered in our deliberations and plans. This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I encourage everyone to join the movement to ensure the protection and safety of elders in our community. I would love to hear your thoughts on how we can do better in spotlighting elders in emergencies. #ElderAbuseAwareness #WEAAD2024 #EldersInEmergencies #ClimateChange #CommunitySafety #InclusionMatters #tafta Call to Action: Share your insights and ideas on how we can better protect and involve older persons in disaster planning and emergency response. Let's work together to create a safer, more inclusive world for all. photocredit: TikTok user Buhlembhele_

This September marks the 20th annual National #Preparedness Month, a time for everyone to recognize the importance of preparedness and take steps that protect themselves and their loved ones. As part of this year's preparedness campaign that focuses on empowering older adults as they prepare for disasters, FEMA released the Disaster Preparedness Guide for Older Adults. The Disaster Preparedness Guide for Older Adults is intended to support older adults and their caregivers in preparing in three easy steps: assess your needs, create a plan and engage your network. The guide provides easy-to-read, user-friendly worksheets that walk individuals and caregivers through a self-assessment to identify specific needs and checklists that create a personalized plan. 🚨🔧🌍 Teach Youth to Prepare for Disasters 🌍🔧🚨 Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? It's the perfect time to empower our youth with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for any disaster. Here are some important steps to help teach young people about disaster preparedness: 🔧 Start the conversation: Engage children in discussions about different types of disasters and why it's important to be prepared. Use age-appropriate language and examples to help them understand. 🔧 Create a family emergency plan together: Involve children in the process of developing an emergency plan for your household. Teach them what to do, where to go, and whom to contact in case of an emergency. 🔧 Assemble an emergency kit: Show children how to gather essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and first aid items. Explain why each item is important and how they can help during a crisis. 🔧 Practice emergency drills: Conduct regular drills to familiarize children with evacuation procedures and safety protocols. Make it interactive and fun to reduce anxiety and build confidence. 🔧 Encourage them to spread the word: Empower children to share their knowledge with friends, classmates, and neighbors. Encouraging others to be prepared can create a ripple effect of readiness in the community. By teaching youth about disaster preparedness, we are equipping them with lifelong skills that can save lives and build resilience. #NationalPreparednessMonth #YouthPreparedness #TeachKids #EmergencyPreparedness #StaySafe #LastingLegacy #BeReady
