Dropping today was my conversation with Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. When we think about solar power, most people have a rigid image of PVs in their mind, but there are other technologies out there. Case in point, Ascent Solar. Ascent Solar, with their thin, flexible panels can provide all power for a small farm, save water usage, and still have 90% crop production. As a farmer living in a rural community I have lots of questions; What does the future look like with the energy transition? Are there opportunities to diversify income with renewable energy, and/or improve efficiencies and reduce costs? What does electricity supply look like for the farm and our local community in the coming years? What does a "just transition" mean for my community and others ? - can renewable energy be the catalyst for rural economic development, diversified rural economies and improve well being for our communities, including more jobs? Will an EV work for me in the bush? Can I charge it with renewable energy? How does bio-energy offer opportunities to decarbonise the farm operations and provide another rural industry? Will the decarbonisation of the south west grid lead to more reliable and less risky electricity? What does this change look like? Can we "electrify the farm and our rural communities"; are others doing it already? These questions and more will answered with this event and provide the opportunity to improve knowledge, which is essential for making good decisions, which strengthens our response, through the energy transition.

Last week, I was very pleased to see that the new episode of my favourite podcast bore the title "Does wildlife win or lose with renewable energy?". The podcast addresses a number of common misconceptions that often cause hunters, fishermen, and the general public to not support solar and wind developments. Similar high-quality conversations are incredibly important for dissolving misconceptions and building trust in renewables, thus facilitating the energy transition process. I will include some timestamps in case you are interested in the podcast! 0:53 (53 minutes in) - The hosts and their guest start discussing renewables, predominantly large-scale solar developments. 1:24 - They begin discussing offshore wind. 1:35 - Discussion on offshore wind and its impact on fisheries, including Rigs-to-reefs initiatives. 1:48 - Conversation shifts to the impact of offshore wind on whales, birds, and specifically discusses the Northern Right Whale.

You voted for it!   Last Friday we asked which unique way of generating renewable energy piqued your interest and the Jellyfish won by a landslide! ⚡️   Swedish scientists have discovered that when exposed to ultraviolet light, a green fluorescent protein produced by Jellyfish, absorbs photons and emits electrons which travel around a circuit to produce electricity.   Whilst we aren’t going to be powering our homes by Jellyfish generated electricity any time soon, we’re all for the exploration of weird and wacky ways to generate electricity.
